Dick Ellis Blog:

With Spring Turkey season just around the corner, Henry USA sent us a video now posted on our homepage that I know you’ll get a kick out of. The point is though, young hunters and smaller hunters won’t get a kick out of it at all. The wait for a gobbler can be too long to question whether or not you’re packing the right turkey load when he does show up (Dick Ellis Photo) Henry wanted to test the viability of their beautiful ...

Opening day for game fish is the first Saturday in May which is next Saturday, May 3rd.  In the past week, we’ve only had one nice seasonal day so the water temperature remains very cold.  This will likely make opening day a bit on the slow side.  The warmest water temperature I have found is 49 degrees.  The two best spot...

Lake Geneva water temperature remains very cold.  There isn’t much fishing going on as the municipal piers have still not been put in the water.  I’m sure they will be put in by opening day of game fishing which is Saturday May 3rd.  The water is so cold, the walleyes that the “Walleyes for tomorrow” organizat...

By Dave Duwe   It’s like Christmas for most outdoor enthusiasts, the opening day of inland fishing season.  After a long winter it’s time to catch some game fish.  Opening day for game fish on most inland waters is the first Saturday in May. Walworth County in Southeastern Wisconsin is blessed with many great fishing w...

Hello – Anglers just might get that chance to fish open water and ice fish on the opening day of the 2014 inland season. Next week I’ll work to get you a roundup of the latest ice/fishing conditions and license sales numbers and we’ll put out some safety reminder tips and an update on where we are with stocking of catchable trout....

Dear Winnebago System Sturgeon Enthusiasts:  Well the sturgeon run continues to linger on, but spawning activity was observed at additional sites today, Sunday April 27.  Numerous active spawning pods were once again present at the Sturgeon Trail in New London, where our crew tagged 91 fish today.  The largest fish han...

Outstanding walleye action on the Wisconsin river this past week with lots of fish being caught.  Most of the walleyes are from 15 to 20 inches but we are also catching some real giants up to and over 30 inches.  The bite has been very consistent all day long and even after dark with most of the fish coming on jig and minnow co...

~ Fishing Guide Nate Baron from Up North Guide Service and fishing guide Scott Bretting from River Rock Inn and Bait Shop, 715-682-3232 (http://riverrockinn.net), report the following: Fishing pressure on Chequamegon Bay has been very minimal this past week. The fishing will improve as melting snow and runoff rejuvenates oxygen levels, but it...

So predictable! We get dumped on with 12-16" of snow midweek only to see temps top out at the high 60's by Sunday. More days of no ice melt as the sun works to get back to the ice. Nice! Here we are twelve days till the opener and ice coverage on the lakes is near 100% with measured depths of 20" to as much as 33".(Hazelhurst to Manitow...

Steve Suman  Warmer daytime temperatures, milder nights, and rain forecast for this week will help remove remaining snow and ice from the North Woods – and “the sooner the better” gets a near-unanimous vote! Pat at Happy Hooker says last week’s winter storm dashed hopes for the start of spring, but everyone is holding...

Looks like most of the Chain Of Lakes should be ice free by the opener of fishing on May 3rd. Ice out is progressing fine right now with a major channel open from the mouth of the Elk river thru Duroy, Elk and into Long, Most of the Narrow spots in Long Lake opening or soon will be. Soo Lake also has a lot of open water right now. The oth...

After a long winter, Delavan Lake is finally opened up.  The water temperature remains very closed, it’s averaging between 44 and 48 degrees.  The warmest water is in the channels, where most of the active fish are.  Make sure that you realize that game fish season is still closed, opening day is the first Saturday in May. The...

Lake Geneva is ice free but very, very cold.  The opening of game fish season is the first Saturday in May but the panfish bite is available now.  The water temperatures are in the low 40’s.  For the panfish stick to the warmest water you can find, typically shallow bays like Abbey Harbor or Trinkes. Most of the fish that are ...

“He’s rolling below that big rock in the current seam. Try to drop it higher up and a little more to the right.”  The words rang down from my son’s sniper perch in the birch tree deadfall like coordinates for an artillery strike.  I cast the egg fly as directed, letting the current swing it down the ...

Because of the harsh winter we’ve had here in the northland, the ice still has not broken up on Chequamegon Bay, so the smelt have not started spawning. In fact, the Ashland area received another 6-8 inches of snow on Wednesday. The “smelt run” usually starts around the third or fourth week in April, shortly after ice-out on ...

I took a walk through the woods behind the house yesterday and found a nice shed antler from a year old buck.  It is not really what I was looking for, but it reminds me that with the snow diminishing, and ground visibility increasing, that this is a good time for locating shed antlers.  Finding shed antlers kind if gives you an i...

For landbound anglers successful outings are highly dependent upon timing, since location is mostly dictated by public access.  You are limited in your ability to change position, so you have to focus on when to be there. May is the right month in Wolf River Country to target white bass, and the lower section of the river offers the b...

As if we needed reminding as to whose the boss around here.....Mother Nature just dumped a couple of new inches of snow while dropping temps down into the mid teens. It may not feel like it this week but signs of spring are all around us, Robins are in our back yards, Ducks and Geese are swimming around in any open water they can find and the cry of the common Loon fills the crisp morning air. The lakes are starting to open and we will be in our boats in no time at all. There are already some big a...

Make sure you practice shooting the same way that you will be shooting when you are calling, sitting-prone,  ect…  PRACTICE. If you decide to call this time of year, get close to the den and do a couple of howls or pup in distress calls.   If I am aftera problem coyote, I leave them alone till the fall.
