By Wayne Morgenthaler I was out fishing three times in this extreme heat and caught all the panfish I wanted.  I went at 5 am or 7 pm and the bite was on.  I was fishing near Lone Rock and just using a waxworm, size 8 hook, and a small bobber.  You need to look for small open pockets in the lily pads and then it just takes a good ca...

By Steve Suman Just in time for the summer vacation and recreation season, the DNR has added a new activities locator – Explore Outdoors – to its website. Visitors can search millions of acres of public lands by county, city, property type, or outdoor activities, and can cover all opportunities on DNR state parks, trails, forests, natu...

By Professional Guide Kurt Justice Heat and high pressure (with the occasional lightning storm thrown in) has made midday fishing rather miserable. No problem, the fish aren’t biting then anyway. The best has been very early in the A.M. (sometimes bite over by 6:30-7) or towards dusk. Fish being caught, but window of opportunity sometimes sm...

By John Luthens It is one of the finest hunting seasons, with a little bit of everything to make it so:  There is the thrill of the chase.  It happens in a bright flurry, supplemented by the finest summer evening weather patterns Wisconsin can set forth. No bag limits exist, and no license fee applies. If the government thought about it...

Fishing remains excellent.  You need to go early to avoid the crowds.  Most days there are between 100-150 fishermen out on the lake.  The fishing has been awesome for bluegills and largemouth bass. Largemouth bass fishing has been great.  You want to fish underneath the north shore piers or on the deep weed line points.  ...

Fishing on Lake Geneva continues to be very good.  The boat traffic has been very intense.  Due to vacation season, you need to go early in the a.m. Smallmouth bass are on the weed line in 15-20 ft of water.  The best location is by Abbey Springs or by the Yacht Club.  The best presentation is a 1/8 oz lindy sinker with a 2 ft ...

By Wayne Morgenthaler Right now there are a number of activities that are about to take place or already have.  If you are one that is looking for outdoor activities, I feel we have some very nice ones to offer.  I just took a canoe trip down the Pine River from Bohen’s Mill (about 5 miles north of Richland Center) to the old commu...

By Professional Guide John Ross The walleye bite has slowed a bit on Phillips Area Waters but the bluegill and perch action is making up for it! Ross's Sport Shop Guide boats are still bringing in nice mixed bag catches. Were not bringing in limits of walleyes but we are pulling a couple of nice eaters every trip and adding some quality gills and ...

By Frank Zumpf, Local Outdoorsman It’s been hot in the Rice Lake area and the fishing has been the same.  The bass fishing has been good, with several clubs holding tournaments on Rice Lake.  This has increased the boat traffic.  I hope there will still be a place for the recreational fisherman and that safe boat handling an...

The Ashland Area Chamber of Commerce report; Fishing is starting to pick up again and the anglers are pleased to see the water starting to clear up. Bay Days is coming July 13th through the 15th. This is a Home Town Festival that is fun for the entire family. What a wonderful time of year to come and visit, enjoy the festival at Bay View Park, and ...

Fishing has been very good this past week with excellent catches of walleyes and crappies coming in along with some very nice muskies.  In addition to the great fishing, we have been seeing a lot of activity around our bear baiting stations. Doug Aziz with a nice musky Charlie Peth and Doug Aziz with Charlie's musky ...

By Local Outdoorsman Frank Zumpf Now that the rains have stopped and we have the lake levels up it’s time to fish.  Local anglers have been doing well on bass.  Many are fishing the weed pockets with plastic worms.  Others are pulling a frog or mouse across the lily pads.  Be sure to take a three count after the strike ...

Fishing continues to be very good.  The best action on the lake has been largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and rock bass.  Largemouth bass have been positioned in the shallow weed flats while the smallmouth bass have been on the break line. Largemouth bass fishing has been excellent.  The best location has been by the Military Academ...

Fishing on Delavan Lake has been fantastic.  Almost all of the species of fish are biting.  The only thing that hampered fishing last week was the strong SW wind, but if you could manage the wind, you could catch fish. Walleye fishing has been good at dusk and dawn.  They are positioned on the main lake points in about 20-22 ft of w...

By John Luthens I’ve been fascinated with the guiding lifestyle for years.  When the other kids went through their phases of wanting to be an astronaut, firefighter, or the next U.S. President, I always wanted to be a professional guide. Guiding willing outdoor enthusiasts into the wild country and getting paid for it-what better way t...

My Jeep was under the weather the entire summer last year and I wasn’t able to get my boat in the water not even once. Seriously; not once. So, I got the Jeep fixed over the winter and was prepared to put the boat in the water this year and then the outboard motor went out.  I now know that overheating a motor isn’t something you ...

By Professional Guide Jerry “Jerkbait” Hartigan The walleye bite on the Flowage has been very scattered over the last week with lots of storms coming through each day.  Walleye are still hitting half a crawler on a weedless jig mostly in wood flats in 8 to 10ft of water.  I did pick up some fish in 14ft and also got some bigg...

By Professional Guide John Carlson Walleye fishing is still going strong in the Phillips Area. Our guide boats are still getting limits of walleyes on most trips out and we are also catching some bonus jumbo perch and big bluegills. We are fishing leeches under slip bobbers in 10 to 18 feet of water around any wood structure. We are also getting t...

Gary Engberg Outdoor If you have not fished Lake Winnebago, then you are missing out on one of Wisconsin’s premier walleye waters which seems to be just getting better and better every year. This past week has been pretty good for walleye activity. A lot of nice fish are being caught in 10 to 14 feet of water along deep weed edges on jigs tipped with minnows.  We are also seeing some nice fish coming on crankbaits like Rapalas and Bombers late in the day as they move up shallower in the weeds. Kevin Meyers with a ni...

By Darrell Pendergrass People sometimes recognize me in public settings, when we meet they usually comment on how much heavier I look in person and that I need to update my column photo – they say I’m not being very honest with my appearance. Invariably conversation will get around to fishing. “How are the fish biting?” The...

By Professional Guide Jeff Winters We’ve been taking everything Mother Nature can throw at us the past 2 weeks. Wind, rain, lightening, 50+ degree temperature swings – we’ve seen it all. We still caught fish through all of it. You had to search out your bites and be patient. We are now coming out of most of the mayfly hatch and t...

By Professional Guide Kenny Wallock Before fishing could resume, my fishing partner, Dave Kinney and I put away our fishing poles for one day, hung up our fishing hats, cleaned up the pontoons, and watched with many guests as Jason and Sherry Szymkowiak were married on the Stevens Point Flowage.  Jason calls the flowage home for fishing, hunt...
