Plenty of remaining ice on local waters is boosting our late ice fishing season. Andy Hoppa & Andy Teller with the groups catch from one day. The crappies bite remains steady with very good catches from local waters.  Most of the fish are now migrating towards their tradition spawning areas and can be caught as they move through these ...

By Dave Hraychuck With the close of gamefish season last week, the time to fish late season panfish has arrived! Excellent ice conditions in northwest Wisconsin continues despite last week’s 10 inches of new snow. The flags flew and the food grilled on the barbeque the last weekend of the gamefish season on Burnett County waters. Perch a...

Rain this past weekend followed by 7 inches of snow overnight (3/10/12) will make lake travel difficult on lakes with the slush that has worsened with last week’s warm weather and the weekend rain. Snowmobile highly recommended. Over the weekend bites have been slowing down and fish reports quite due to the incoming weather. Some die-hards fi...

By John Luthens Like a plundering barbarian digging in his heels for an epic charge, I have stockpiled an arsenal for a year’s conquest of Wisconsin.  Over the span of nine days I made the rounds to three sporting shows and I am now fully armed. I limbered up my casting arm at the Northeast Wisconsin Sport Fishing Show in Appleton, mad...

Fishing Guide Roger LaPenter from Anglers All (715)-682-5754, http://www.anglersallwisconsin.com reports: There is still plenty of ice fishing time left for the season. There are reports of many species of fish being caught right out on the bay in Ashland. Perch have been extremely plentiful and are a good size. Also, there are some nice size Brow...

MADISON – Preliminary results from systematic monitoring of Wisconsin lakes for aquatic invasive species confirm that boaters, not ducks or other birds, are spreading the invaders around, state and University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers say. State researchers in SCUBA gear looked for aquatic invasive species as part of a five-year monit...

EDITOR'S ADVISORY: This news release was previously issued to agricultural media. MADISON – The bumper crop of smallmouth bass produced in southwestern Wisconsin in 2012 is one more reason for farmers to keep up their good work in carefully spreading manure on fields so that it doesn’t run off into streams and kill fish, state water re...

By John Luthens I kneeled with the box under the overhead glare of the single hanging bulb, with the bulb swaying slowly and shadows dancing across the cold concrete. Fly rods stood in those shadows. Waders hung by hooks and cast booted silhouettes. Nets, knives and tackle boxes overflowed the shelves where I had pulled the fly box from its hidden...

By Darrel Pendergrass Most men of the outdoors are able to face danger without fear of injury or harm, mostly because they are intelligent and well versed in the ways of the wild. It comes with the territory. Should an outdoorsman be confronted with an edgy black bear our guy knows to hold his ground; he shouldn’t run around in circles flai...

Crappie fishing has slowed but the Gill action has been great. We have been finding gills close to structure in 10 to 20 feet of water. Waxies or Spikes on small jigs have worked well. Walleye action is fair with most fish coming in the low light hours on shiners. Northern action is still great, Large Goldens on Tip-Ups are catching most of the p...

I ran the last gasp of fuel from my ice fishing season, because like an ice-auger engine, that is what you do before you tuck it away for the season. My ice engine went out in a final roaring cloud of snow and ice. Monday night found me in Oshkosh, near the Lake Winnebago shores, with a truckload of jigs, poles, tip-ups, not to mention auger blade...

Recent snows have hampered travel on area lakes but if you can get out the fishing has been outstanding. The crappie bite remains the bet I have seen in years.  We are catching not only numbers of fish but really nice big slab crappies as well. Most of the fish we are finding are suspended 2 to 6 feet off the bottom over  20 feet of wate...

The 2013 sturgeon spear fishery on the Winnebago System is officially over, with very similar results to the 2012 fishery.  A total of 12 fish (0 juvenile females, 7 adult females, and 5 males) were harvested from Lake Winnebago today.  There were a total of 306 fish (30 juvenile females, 131 adult females, and 145 males) harvested from L...

The 2013 sturgeon spearing season is really starting to wind down, only 3 more days left for spearers to pursue that fish of a lifetime!  That is until next February when it all starts over again, but that is a long ways off.   Harvest picked up slightly today, with a total of 14 fish (2 juvenile females, 6 adult females, and 6 mal...

The recently completed NAFA auction in Toronto Feb 21-23 saw some dramatic price increases in wild fur pelts. This reflects a combination of reduced animal populations due to the summer drought, cold winter weather and promotion of fur garments in China. Some articles like raccoon, muskrat and red foxes almost doubled in price. Even less desirable ...

Even with the snow and winds today, spearers were still able to get out on Lake Winnebago and harvest some fish.  There were 12 fish harvested from Lake Winnebago today, 8 of which were registered at Jerry’s Bar in Oshkosh.  Action in this area of the lake has really picked up over the last few days, and spearers are having success....
