The ice went out of Chequamegon Bay on Saturday night, April 11, and the smelt run began the very next night. The smelt ran pretty well all last week, with a few hiccups here and there. The run did continue over the past weekend. On Sunday and Monday nights people were still getting some smelt, but Carolyn Swartz, co-owner of Anglers All in Ashlan...

Anglers had been traveling from Bono Creek north and getting...

Dear Winnebago System Sturgeon Enthusiasts:    As anticipated the 2015 sturgeon spawning run on the Winnebago System passed by very quickly.  The first spawning activity was observed on the upper Fox River @ Eureka on the evening of April 14.  However, spawning activity was very limited at that point.  Spawning ...

By Wayne Morgenthaler We had enough rain to bring streams up to almost normal levels.  Catch and release is still in effect, so return the trout back into the creeks as quick as possible.  Spin casting or fly casting has had good success.  I prefer spinners in the small sizes.  Gold or silver Panther Martins work the best on sm...

A week plus of June-like daytime temps took care of all ice (Trout out as of this weekend).  Many smaller lakes had temps shoot up so quickly as to have had the walleyes finish up spawning.  Sunday saw temps back down into April reality, but, with many lakes in the high 40’s already, spawning should continue, just not as quick...

Steve Suman If you enjoyed last week’s weather, you will enjoy next week’s weather and the following week’s weather even more so. This week, probably not so much, as snow continues to show a presence in the forecast. Hang in there – high temperatures return to the upper 50s by the weekend, projected to be in the 50s for the...

By John Luthens Trekking to southwestern Arkansas to mine for diamonds was measured in my mind against Klondike gold in northern Alaska. I’m not a prospector and had never been to either place. I only held visions of what it would be like. Thoughts of Alaska were easy. They garnered snow-capped mountains; Rushing streams splitting boulders,...

Dear Winnebago System Sturgeon Enthusiasts:   As anticipated, today was a big day for our fisheries crew on the Winnebago System.  We had three crews working to tag sturgeon below the Shawano Dam and we were able to handle 700 fish.  This was especially a productive day because we also collected and fertilized eggs for mu...

Attention Winnebago System Sturgeon Enthusiasts: The sturgeon spawning migration continues to progress on the Winnebago System and there are currently fish spawning at multiple sites throughout the watershed.  Our DNR crew tagged fish at multiple sites today including the Sturgeon Trail in New London, Bamboo Bend in Shiocton, the Shawan...

  • 4/17/2015 12:15:00 PM
We have had great walleye action this past week in both Central Wisconsin and on Green Bay and its tributaries.  The BIG Lake has been producing numbers of large fish that average 26 to 30 inches long!!!  The river has been producing heavy numbers of fish in the 14 to 18 inch range with a few surpassing the 20 inch mark....

The famed Wisconsin fishing opener is two and half weeks away. Boats and equipment are starting to come out of storage, the walleyes are starting the spring spawn, and preparing your gear early is going to give you a jump on this year’s fishing season. This week’s article is not going to cover how and where to catch fish, but I'm going ...

The pond behind the shop went ice free on 4/10.  Typically this means Lake Minocqua will be ice free in 7-10 days.  Thanks to temps cracking 70 degrees, lots of sun and high winds, Lake Minocqua is more than 50% ice free already.  Many other lakes are already open and with a forecast of daytime highs in the 50’s and 60's, con...

Steve Suman The forecast for this week should bring a smile to anyone in Hayward and the North Woods – warm and sunny, highs in the mid 60s, and a few minimal chances for rain showers. This is an excellent week to prepare for the May 2 fishing opener! “Open water spurred some panfish anglers to get on the lakes,” says Pat at Hap...
