Now it starts.  Too much to keep up with in Wisconsin, and that is one nice problem for an outdoorsman. OWO Columnist Wayne Morgenthaler and his son Neal spelled double trouble for two Richland County gobblers after four days of not filling tags. We put the May-June issue of On Wisconsin Outdoors to bed last week with 100,000 copies being distributed statewide. Look for your copy at any Kwik Trip statewide…that’s 400 stores ...

Steve Suman This week, the forecast calls for much-needed snowfall and a return to more seasonal temperatures, including sub-zero lows next weekend (maybe not so much needed?) Here’s wishing you all a very Merry Christmas! “Anglers report 10-13 inches of clear, solid ice on most lakes,” says Pat at Happy Hooker, “with a t...

A week of stable weather meant no ice loss, but little gain. A heavy fresh snow on Sunday afternoon (12/21) will mean you can leave the cleats at home. New snow accumulation was about 1.5 to 2", forecast is for sporadic snows over the next week, but fairly mild temps in the low to mid 30's. New moon period this week should provide daytime...

For years we stayed for a week’s vacation with three other couples at a resort on Lake Minocqua. The Minocqua area in Wisconsin is a good choice because it can accommodate the 4-wheelers, the golfers, the shoppers, the restaurant connoisseurs, and the fishermen of our crew. The women plan this trip for an entire year, fine-tuning almost every...

Warm temps over the weekend and early this week have melted all of the snow off the ice making ice conditions very slick, The lake ice is holding up fairly well to the warm temps with 8 to 15 inches being reported on most area lakes. Caution needs to be taken in current areas and high run off areas such as where drainage ditches enter the lakes and...

John Luthens Phantom railroad crossing and the starting point of the Christmas map. The anticipated snow came that night as I rumbled through the cabin basement in a map-making scavenger hunt. Besides housing countless boxes of who-knows-what, the basement is a holy shrine constructed for the sole purpose of trout fishing.  I found a box ...

Steve Suman According to forecasts, the rain, drizzle, and dense fog will soon give way to snow and temperatures that are “more seasonal.” We had a nice break, but ... we need colder weather and snow to thicken ice and pack snowmobile and cross-country ski trails. “Ice is 10-13 inches deep on the Quiet Lakes,” says Pat at&...

Most area lakes have between 6 and 10 inches of good solid ice with a few up to and near that 12 inch mark.  The snow cover is limited so travel and accessibility on the lakes has been very good. We had a great panfish bite in central Wisconsin this past week, with good numbers of both crappies and bluegills. Most of the fish are in 8 to 12 f...

John Luthens Like the Christmas ornaments that come out of our storage closet every year, this story always seems to get unpacked with them. Well, Its starting out to be a great ice fishing season! Enough ice to get around on... with not to much snow on the ice to worry about access or travel. Many lakes are formed because of a dam.  The rivers that fill those lakes are called feeder rivers. I was told that, in late summer, bass sometimes migrate up these feeder rivers because of the cooler oxygenated water. The Clintonville Pond lies 16 miles north of my home and it has a feeder river called the Pigeon River. Jumping into a new adv...

This past week has been phenomenal for ice fishing.  With 5 to 10 inches of good ice and little snow on most lakes, travel conditions are about as perfect as you could want.  In addition to the great conditions the bite has been very good for all species.   Walleyes have been extremely active right before and after dark with some go...
