By Captain Jim Hudson715-209-6431Hudson@fishchequamegonbay.com In the “Bay” itself, smallmouth are starting to binge feed pretty good,” said Captain Jim Hudson, referring to Chequamegon. “The days are getting shorter and this triggers the fish to start putting on the pounds to make it through their long winter. Now, the ext...

Fishing on Lake Geneva continues to be excellent with very light boat traffic in the morning.  It certainly isn’t seeing the same amount of fishing pressure that Lake Delavan is experiencing. Largemouth bass are on the deep weedline in 18-20 ft of water.  The fish are being caught using three different methods.  The first is C...

Fishing continues to be above average on Delavan Lake.  The bass are hitting well and the bluegills are also a tremendous bite right now.  The boat traffic is still pretty high, but with school starting in the next week or two it should decrease significantly. Bluegills continue to bite in 30 ft of water suspended 10-15 ft down.  Th...

By John Luthens It ended with my nephews jumping from the end of a dock into Pewaukee Lake.  It was nine in the morning, with sun sparkling onto the green water and cotton ball clouds rolling lazily above. My brother and I stood laughing, and indeed it was the two of us who had put the idea in the kids’ heads in the first place. On the...

Speaker of the House John Boehner joins Hooksetters for a day on the water: This weeks report is going to be a little different than any of my other reports. For the past two months I have been planning a fishing trip in Wisconsin for the Speaker of the House John Boehner.  After initially being contacted by Dr. Tom Turner from Wausau about J...

By Darrell Pendergrass We’ll be in Canada next week at this time and we’ve already gotten our most important piece of equipment packed and ready to go. This particular item is a must-have when going north, but it’s one of those over-looked things that usually goes amiss. Is it a fishing pole, you ask? Come on, there’s so m...

By Professional Guide John Carlson Water temps are dropping from the mid-80s down to the upper 60s to mid-70s on all area lakes. This week Ross's Sport Shop guides targeted Bass and Musky. The Musky are going on Double 8 and Double 10 bucktails.  The surface bite is also picking up again for Musky. Largemouth Bass are very active and we did ...

By Wayne Morgenthaler Now that we are getting cooler temperatures in the morning, the backwater fishing action is slowing down.  Fishing from shore on the Wisconsin backwaters is best done with a small ice fishing jig tipped with a waxworm attached about a foot below a small bobber.  Just remember to fish the edges of lily pads or dead t...

By Professional Guide Kurt Justice Mid-August is showing some signs of turning things around for anglers targeting certain species.  While the cool nights have slowed the bite for some in the Lakeland area - in general fishing overall has improved. By Steve Suman The Hayward area has another beautiful week in the making, with a few chances of rain, if forecasts hold anywhere close to true. Mild daytime highs in the 70s, nighttime lows in the 40s and 50s – great for just about any and every outdoor recreational activity! “A welcome break in the weather at last,” says Pat at...

With the cooler weather, the fishing has moved slightly more shallow for the largemouth bass.  The northern pike fishing is still a bit elusive. Largemouth bass have been biting both in 6-8 ft of water or as deep as 20 ft of water.  The best approach has been drop shotting green pumpkin worms about 1 ft above bottom.  I like the Yum...

As the end of summer nears, the boat traffic has been decreasing as the weeks go by.  The cooler weather may also be contributing to the reduction.  Some of the best fishing is ahead of us in fall.  After Labor Day, we see some of the best catches and opportunities for trophy fish. Smallmouth bass are in the 20-25 ft depth range off...

By John Luthens I had a day coming all to myself in northwestern Wisconsin, the small town of Brule to be exact.  My daughter wanted to spend a week with Grandma, and I heroically volunteered to drive her up.  I could easily squeeze a day in to do that. No need for Grandma to meet us half-way. No need to bother my wife with hectic packi...

Musky action has picked up this past week with a few nice fish being caught and one giant going a whopping 53 inches long.  A lot of the muskies are coming during low light periods with the largest ones coming right at or after dark.  The muskies have been biting on jerkbaits like Suicks, big bucktails like the cowgirl and topwater baits ...

By Professional Guide John Carlson The much needed rain and a drop in evening temps has cooled the water a few degrees (down to the mid 70's in most lakes) and heated up the fishing. By Steve Suman The forecast for this week holds quite the mix, from somewhat chilly lows to highs in the 80s, and chances for rain.
