Dick Ellis Blog:
3/8/2019
With Spring Turkey season just around the corner, Henry USA sent us a video now posted on our homepage that I know you’ll get a kick out of. The point is though, young hunters and smaller hunters won’t get a kick out of it at all. The wait for a gobbler can be too long to question whether or not you’re packing the right turkey load when he does show up (Dick Ellis Photo) Henry wanted to test the viability of their beautiful ...

By Professional Guide Kurt Justice Mid-August is showing some signs of turning things around for anglers targeting certain species.  While the cool nights have slowed the bite for some in the Lakeland area - in general fishing overall has improved. Musky:  Good to Very Good.  Action on bucktails, spinnerbaits and top-water lures pi...

By Steve Suman The Hayward area has another beautiful week in the making, with a few chances of rain, if forecasts hold anywhere close to true. Mild daytime highs in the 70s, nighttime lows in the 40s and 50s – great for just about any and every outdoor recreational activity! “A welcome break in the weather at last,” says Pat at...

With the cooler weather, the fishing has moved slightly more shallow for the largemouth bass.  The northern pike fishing is still a bit elusive. Largemouth bass have been biting both in 6-8 ft of water or as deep as 20 ft of water.  The best approach has been drop shotting green pumpkin worms about 1 ft above bottom.  I like the Yum...

As the end of summer nears, the boat traffic has been decreasing as the weeks go by.  The cooler weather may also be contributing to the reduction.  Some of the best fishing is ahead of us in fall.  After Labor Day, we see some of the best catches and opportunities for trophy fish. Smallmouth bass are in the 20-25 ft depth range off...

By John Luthens I had a day coming all to myself in northwestern Wisconsin, the small town of Brule to be exact.  My daughter wanted to spend a week with Grandma, and I heroically volunteered to drive her up.  I could easily squeeze a day in to do that. No need for Grandma to meet us half-way. No need to bother my wife with hectic packi...

Musky action has picked up this past week with a few nice fish being caught and one giant going a whopping 53 inches long.  A lot of the muskies are coming during low light periods with the largest ones coming right at or after dark.  The muskies have been biting on jerkbaits like Suicks, big bucktails like the cowgirl and topwater baits ...

Sturgeon return to Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery show pond WILD ROSE, Wis. -– The return of lake sturgeon to Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery’s show pond after 40 years is just one of many reasons to visit the state-of-the art facility that’s a backbone of Wisconsin’s hatchery system. Weekly News article published: August 7, 2012 by the Central Office Tips on where to go, what tactics to use MADISON – Wisconsin’s record-setting heat and resulting high water temperatures may be stressing northern pike, but catfish aren’t complaining and anglers will find that for the next few months, these fish are the cat&rsq...

By Frank Zumpf It’s August already.  Summer has been going by so fast.  It seems like we had the “dog days” of summer in July.  With school starting before you know it, I’m thinking that if you know any kids who haven’t been out fishing, now is the time to take them out.  If you’ve already ...

Logan Joniaux of  Luxemburg, Wisconsin landed this walleye just shy of 30-inches while fishing with his dad on Lake DuBay. They target walleyes with night crawlers and minnows. The Joniaux family has vacationed every summer for nine years at Lakeview Log Cabin Resort in Mosinee.  Connect with Resort owner Sue Gross at 715-693-2595 or ww...

By Professional Guide John Carlson The much needed rain and a drop in evening temps has cooled the water a few degrees (down to the mid 70's in most lakes) and heated up the fishing. Earlier this week Ross's Sport Shop guides had some great mixed bag trips and some good Musky outings. On Saturday one of the guide boats boated over 35 walleye and ...

By Steve Suman The forecast for this week holds quite the mix, from somewhat chilly lows to highs in the 80s, and chances for rain. If you are fishing, try to get out ahead of the fronts, but watch for thunderstorms – and get off the water immediately if lightning is in or moving into the area. “Walleye fishing was fair during the hig...

Fishing on Delavan Lake continues to be excellent.  The best bite on the lake remains bluegills with Largemouth bass being a close second.  Both fish are on the deep weedlines in 16-18 ft of water.  With the warmer weather, boat traffic is extreme so try for early a.m. or late p.m. Largemouth bass can be caught on two different patt...

Fishing continues to be very good on Lake Geneva.  Based on the warm weather, you need to plan your fishing trips accordingly as the boat traffic can be intense. Lake Trout fishing has been excellent.  The best depth continues to be 90-100 ft down in 120-130 ft of water.  Most of the action is coming off of a small Dodger and Fly or...

By John Luthens My hometown of Grafton is a nicely developed suburban community about twenty minutes north of Milwaukee. There is a mix of industry, commerce and residential subdivisions, as well as the occasional farm field and undeveloped woodlot. When civic progress meets natural resources, it can be a tricky barbed wire fence to straddle. You...

Wisconsin angler Ron Klimcke  experienced another great evening of walleye fishing on the Big Chip Friday. “I moved around and fished several spots before I found them,” Klimcke said. “Once I found the fish it only took about 35 minutes to limit out. I used a jig tipped with either a leech or half of a night crawler while ...

By Phil Schweik Walleyes are biting on leeches and crawlers in about 8 to 12 feet of water. most of the fish have come from heavy cover like wood and weeds. Slip bobber rigs are working pretty well during low light conditions but during the daytime a simple jig tipped with live bait has been the best for getting the walleyes out of the heaviest of...

By Darrell Pendergrass My grandparent’s place in rural western North Carolina was situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains; it always seemed old there when we’d go to visit, yet comfortable and familiar. By Frank Zumpf Well, it’s been warm enough to go fishing this week. Now is the time I think about how nice it was ice fishing. Of course, when I was out on the ice I was thinking how nice open water would be. The bass fishing has been good, with the largemouth in the lily pads or deep holes in the weeds. One thing that seems to be slow i...
