After a little taste of winter late last week (yes, snowflakes on May 15) and the drop in water temperature that comes with the cold, things look good from here on out with a nice gradual warm up for the next 7-10 days.  We will need the warmth and sun to get the weeds growing.  We are weeks behind on both plant growth above and below the...

The water is starting to warm up with the nicer weather we have been having. The forecast looks great, and this coming week of fishing should really heat up. When the water hits the 50 degree mark, it seems the fish really start to turn on. That includes both largemouth and smallmouth bass, as they prepare for the spawning season. The fish need to...

Walleye fishing has still been good for Ross's Sport Shop Guides, with the lowered daily bag limits on most of the area lakes it takes no time to limit out with nice walleyes. Our guides have been catching walleye in 4 to 15 feet of water depending on the lake we are fishing.  When we are fishing shallow we are looking for mud flats with wood,...

By John Luthens  A wooden ski ramp towered above on a pine-clad ridge.  Bands of white trilliums sprinkled the forest clearings below.  Campfire smoke rose lazily in the air and fly rods leaned on trees. There was only the slight matter of fording a stream to reach the camp.  With a spray of water above my truck’s...

There’s some Very Good Fishing Going on Out There Hi Folks --  There’s some very good fishing going on out there as we follow the spawn bite around from lake to lake.  Despite the foul weather and high winds this past week, fish continued to bite.  It got a little tougher Thursday and Friday, but we still managed...

Action in Central Wisconsin for multi-species is really turning on.  Anglers are having a lot of fun catching walleyes, crappies, bass and pike.  In addition to the previously mentioned species action has been very good for bluegills and catfish.  All in all the bite has been extremely good. Most of the anglers are targetin...

Steve and Rob Tobin  targeted coho salmon out of Milwaukee May 14 when this 22 pound King hit in 35 feet of water with water temperature at 48 degrees.  45 minute battle on a three color lead core reel and rod.  The Tobin brothers also caught nine cohos for a two-man limit in a few hours.

Well, the smelt run is all over with for Ashland, everyone. Roger LaPenter, proprietor of Anglers All, said there was no action at all Saturday night. He believes the run has ended for the season on this side of Chequamegon Bay. Roger advises smelters to try their luck over in Washburn, up in Cornucopia, or farther along the Lake Superior sho...

This past week was cold and the lake didn’t warm up too much.  We also 5 inches of rain, which kept the fishing action low.  The forecast for this week is sunshine and decent temps so the water should continue to warm and increase the fishing opportunities.   Smallmouth bass can be caught on either a small pink headed hai...

Delavan Lake continues to busy with fishermen.  With the 5 inches of rain this week and a lake fly hatch the fishing has slowed a bit and the numbers from last week have been reduced a little.  With the warm weather predicted for this weed it should ignite the bite. Some walleyes are being caught off the main lake points in 26-28 ft of w...

Aside from rain and wind early this week, the forecast indicates we might finally break the cool weather barrier! The extended forecast shows no lows temperatures less than 40 degrees for the next two weeks and highs in the 60s and 70s. “Fishing conditions improved appreciably in the last 10 days,” says Pat at Happy Hooker, “but ...

Unfortunately, the smelt run has diminished once again, folks. “The wind switched, started coming out of the south, and pushed everything out into the deep water,” said Roger LaPenter, proprietor of Anglers All, referring to the drop-off in numbers on Friday night. Roger said he only harvested 30 lbs. of smelt last night behind his sho...

~ Fishing Guide Nate Baron from Up North Guide Service and fishing guide Scott Bretting from River Rock Inn and Bait Shop, 715/682-3232 (http://riverrockinn.net), report the following: The ice finally went out of Chequamegon Bay last Friday, thanks to some strong westerly winds and a lot of rain. The water is still really cold right now though and...

The smelt are still running, but the run has slowed considerably. Not very many people were out at Bayview Park along U.S. Highway 2, also known as Pamida Beach. “They got very little down there last night,” said Roger LaPenter, proprietor of Anglers All. Roger said he only netted about 90 lbs. of the little silver devils last night b...

Steve Ellis, brother of OWO publisher, found good fishing on walleyes and this released smallmouth bass in both weeds and rocks in Iron county.  He wouldn’t however, tell his brother the name of the lake, so I could blab it to all of you. The fish were all taken bait casting.

Great action for walleyes and crappies this past week with not only numbers of good fish but some real slabs as well.  In addition to the great fishing, turkey hunting has proven very successful for many hunters as well. The walleyes have finished spawning and have moved to post-spawn areas.  Look for the walleyes to be in shallo...

It's been a little soggy in the North Woods the last couple of weeks but battling the high water between rain drops has been rewarding most anglers with good fishing. Our guides at Ross's Sport Shop are in the Walleye mode right now and the Walleye are treating our clients right, our boats have been averaging 30 walleyes per 4 hour trip with some ...

By John Luthens Acts of creation are ordinarily reserved for gods and poets, but humbler folk may circumvent this restriction if they know how.  To plant a pine, for example, one need be neither god nor poet; one need only own a shovel.  By virtue of this curious loophole in the rules, any clodhopper may say: Let there be a tree – ...

Thanks to some decent weather, the water is starting to warm up nicely. The fish are slowly starting to put the feed bag on and becoming more active. With that said, still working the bait slow is going to get more bites than working a bait aggressively right now.  The walleyes are still pushing into the shallows in the evening and ...

The smelt are still running! People netted a good amount of smelt again last night in Ashland. However, not as many people were out at Bayview Park along U.S. Highway 2, also known as Pamida Beach. One smelter who went there said he was out until 3 a.m. and only got 18 smelt. The smelt ran from about 9 p.m. and quit before 2 in the morning, said A...
