Dick Ellis Blog:

Now it starts.  Too much to keep up with in Wisconsin, and that is one nice problem for an outdoorsman. OWO Columnist Wayne Morgenthaler and his son Neal spelled double trouble for two Richland County gobblers after four days of not filling tags. We put the May-June issue of On Wisconsin Outdoors to bed last week with 100,000 copies being distributed statewide. Look for your copy at any Kwik Trip statewide…that’s 400 stores ...

Overall, the fishing on Lake Geneva remains a bit slow.  The warm water this summer has made the fishing a lot slower than typical for this time of year.  The lake has seen less pressure with the kids back to school.  As the water cools the fishing should improve greatly.  The best bite remains the largemouth bass. The largemou...

Most of the past week, the heat has been above average and the lake temperature has been 4-5 degrees higher than normal for this time of year, this is also making the fishing a bit slower than normal for this time of year.  The overall size of the fish has been relatively small but there are still some great  numbers. Largemouth bass hav...

September 5, 2016 Hayward Lakes Area Outdoor Report Steve Suman   September’s start looks to be a continuation of August and the past summer, with far too many chances for rain and thunderstorms throughout this week. Keep in mind those are NOT guarantees! On the optimistic side, it appears rain chances dwindle after mid-week, with s...

9/9/2016- Reported by AAA Sports    The cooler weather is when the true fishing enthusiast get out on the water. The lazy days of summer are over. By John Luthens John Luthens prepares to pack it in on the North Country Trail, near Solon Springs, Wisconsin. Squinting into the morning sun, surveying the hardwoods that climbed from the boggy headwaters of the St Croix River, near Solon Springs, Wisconsin, I took a deep breath of northern air and a first, tentative step up the ridge trail. I...

It has been another fantastic week for outdoor activities in the central Wisconsin area.  We didn’t have much time for fishing this past week with the start of the 2016 bear season under way as we have been very busy in the woods baiting and prepping for the hunt.  This year our prepping and scouting payed off big time with 3 nice b...

It has been another really good week for fishing in the central Wisconsin area.  Water temperatures are in the upper 60’s to low 70”s and the action has been very good for all species. Walleyes continue to be very active early and late in the day. We have been finding most of our fish by working a jig and minnow or a jig and crawl...

With the cooler temperatures the fishing has been improving.  The boat traffic has been substantially less as the back to school rush happens.  This reduction in boat traffic gives anglers opportunities to fish throughout the day. Largemouth bass fishing has been excellent on the hard bottom locations throughout the lake.  My favori...

The end of the summer is growing near and any nice weather day is a great opportunity to catch some fish.  The fishing has been great overall.  The water has started to cool with the lower temps at night and the fish are biting better than when the water temperature was 80+ degrees. Largemouth bass fishing has been very production in 13-...

A combination of weather and time helped to pull the fishing up a bit by weeks end.  With some shallow weeds showing signs of dying back (despite surface temps averaging 70-72), a shift to deeper weeds has been the focus for fish and anglers alike.  Those deeper weeds of 13-16’ are holding a lot of species (Walleye, LMB, SMG and gil...

Backyard wildlife on the Wisconsin River I’ve been unable to fish much the last few weeks due to an injury I suffered when I got clipped by my Labrador retriever.
