Central Wisconsin Outdoor Report
Warm temperatures are sticking around this fall encouraging outdoor participation. With that said the fishing and hunting continue to be hot.
Fishing remains very good with musky and walleyes taking the center stage. Most of the action has come from deeper water in the 8 to 12 foot range with some fish holding even deeper. The walleyes have been staying close to mid lake structure and jig and minnow combinations seem to be the most consistent tactic for catching them right now. We are even picking up a few nice crappies at the same time we are targeting the walleyes. Muskies are showing very selective feeding windows right now and the windows may can range from a few minutes to over an hour. The problem is that you don’t know what period of the day that they are going to turn on, so you have to be out there all day long to be there when it happens. For a little help watch the moon phases and try to plan around them, it seems to help a little bit but Mother Nature can always throw you a curve.
Hunters preparing for the rut are experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures and conditions for this time of the year. What does that mean? It means that the conditions may prolong the rut and it should increase your opportunities at tagging that big buck. With bucks in the rut they can be found just about anywhere. We recently had one running around on top of a dam at mid-day chasing a doe right out in the open. If you are looking for consistency, look for areas with heavy doe populations. Set up in strategic locations between feeding and bedding areas always taking the wind into consideration.
