Price County Fishing Report 5-27-2014

Great weather and great fishing combined for a great Memorial Day Weekend!

Pictured is Ross's Sport Shop Guide John Kleczewski
with his daughter Josie and a nice walleye that she caught
while John was scouting for an upcoming walleye trip.

The Crappie and Bluegill have finally moved shallow on most of the area lakes, Crappie are being taken in the shallow wood of most lakes on Minnows or Plastics under a bobber, My favorite set up for this type of fishing is a St Croix Premier PS60LF 6' Light action, I spool a Shamino 1000 series reel with 5 pound power pro line. I personally like using plastics like Peg Legs set about a foot under a float. Cast out around cover and pull the rig back to you about 6" at a time making the Peg Leg hop up and swim back down. Make sure you wait between  pulls and let the lure come to a compete rest. Most of the time this is when the Crappie will gobble it up.

Bluegill are stacked tight to shoreline cover and offer easy fast action that can be fun for beginning fishermen or youth. They are easy to fish for and take very minimal tackle to catch them. A simple Rod and reel combo with a Number 6 Eagle Claw ELA hook, split Shot, float and a bucket of bait is all that you need. Gill's can be caught on a verity of baits including Waxies, Worms, Crawlers, Plastics and Gulp.

The Walleye action is still going good for Ross's Sport Shop guides, They are moving out of the very shallow water and into anywhere from 5 to 15 feet of water depending on what area lake your fishing. We are still doing well with 1/16 to 1/8 ounce jigs and Fathead minnows, the bites are kind of light and you need a good quality rod for this type of fishing. St Croix Premier rods are made right here in Price county, even the rod blank is designed and hand made from raw material in Park Falls WI. A 6 foot Medium Light rod is what I like for this type of fishing, It's light enough to feel the bite but still has enough back bone to set the hook on a quality Walleye.

Musky season opened over the weekend and many fishermen reported a slow bite. We had some action in my boat on down sized lures like Rizzo's, Small Phantoms, smaller Grandma's and large bass spinnerbaits fishing in very shallow water. Hot colors seemed to be moving the most fish for us. Musky action should continue to get better as the water warms a bit.

Good Luck on the water!!!!

“The goodness of a person and of the society he or she lives in often comes down to very simple things and words found in the Scout Law. Every society depends on trust and loyalty, on courtesy and kindness, on bravery and reverence. These are the values of Scouting, and these are the values of Americans.”
