Price County Fishing Report

On Wisconsin Outdoors with Dick Ellis On Wisconsin Outdoors with Dick Ellis

Pictured is my son Chayton Carlson fishing and with the fish that we kept for a meal.

Saturday I was able to get out on the water with my oldest son Chayton. We set out in the early afternoon with plans to catch at least one of each open season species in the lake we were fishing. By the end of the day we caught smallmouth, walleye, perch, crappie, and bluegill.

Despite the cooler temps most of the fish were very shallow, We found the smallmouth on super shallow rock we were fishing them with smaller 2.5" Gitzit tubes and also some smaller crappie sliders. Don't let these smaller plastics fool you as we are boating smallmouth pushing the 20" mark on them.

Crappie and Gills were hanging around thick wood cover and fallen trees. We were catching the Bluegill on chunks of crawlers under floats and crappie were eating up our small plastics suspended under floats.

In most cases the panfish were in such shallow water that we could sight fish for them and target the ones that we wanted to catch. We were finding the walleye in a little deeper water about 10 to 15 feet and catching them on a verity of lures including deep diving crank baits and jigs tipped with crawlers, fatheads or gulp. At the end of the day we ended up releasing a pile of walleye, smallmouth and panfish and could have easily each kept limits of walleye and panfish. The 11 panfish that we did keep tasted great for supper that night.
