Upriver Lakes spear fishery vignette
Attention Winnebago Sturgeon Spearing Enthusiasts: As you all should be aware from my previous email report, the Upriver Lakes spear fishery closed today after just three short days. The 341 fish harvested during the Upriver Lakes season is the most ever harvested during an Upriver Lakes fishery since the lottery system was implemented in 2007. Further, this was the 2nd shortest of the 8 seasons spanning 2007-2014, and the fishery offered a staggering 72.7% spearer success rate. Last year I wanted to provide more information about the history of sturgeon spearing on the Upriver Lakes, so I drafted a vignette to chronicle past events in the fishery. I have since updated the vignette to provide up to date information including the 2014 spear fishery. I hope you enjoy the read. I also wanted to say that it has come to my attention that the 148 pound fish that was speared yesterday was registered by Don Feldner, not Dave Feldner as indicated in yesterday’s report. There must have been an error in the data transferring between me and our registration staff at the end of the day. So I apologize for the confusion and congratulations Don on an impressive fish.
