Low water can’t stop good fishing

By Wayne Morgenthaler

I was out fishing two times this past week and the action is still good.  The Wisconsin River is very low now but the catfish are in an aggressive mood.  The cat in the photo attached was caught on a mini mite in pink.  I missed him on the first hit but on the second cast grabbed the bait and took off.  I was using 4 pound test and had a lot of fun playing him to the boat.  The best fishing is still early morning or early evening.  You need to fish the deeper water both on the river and the backwaters.   I always make sure to bring ice along if I am going to keep fish.  The water levels are at the lowest I have ever seen.

Trout fishing has been excellent and the big ones have been hitting on Panther Martins in the color of yellow. Perch fishing has also been very good.  The photo attached shows Mike Collins with two beauties taken this week.

Richland County’s recently concluded Churning Dirt’s 5th annual truck and tractor pull competition which also included highly entertaining camel races is just one example of the ongoing fun we offer.  Check out www.hybridredneck.com for photos and events on the calendar that you will not want to miss.

This weekend, join the annual Midwest Scroll Saw Trade Show hosted at the Richland Center High School.  Hunters and anglers, the Huntin’ Shack located at 208 S. Church Street, in downtown Richland Center just opened with all your hunting and fishing supplies.  Also, Anderson Outdoors with an indoor bow shooting range will open soon.  Try out your bows before you buy.

A good place to find information for outdoor activities for Richland County is to stop in at the Visitor Center located in Richland Center at the railroad station which is currently open from 8 to 4, Monday through Friday. They have some outstanding maps to help you navigate. They can also line you up with local guides, lodging, dining, entertainment and more outdoors in Richland County. Call the Richland Chamber at 608-647-6205, or connect at chamber@richlandalliance.com or www.richlandchamber.com.
