Northwest Wisconsin Outdoor Report 4-5-2013
By: David Hraychuck
At this time last year, boats were being readied, reels being spooled and open water panfish fishing was under way. This year, a check of Polk and Burnett County lakes shows an average of 18” of ice! Lots of lakes have not “cracked” yet, so the water is still on top of the ice and the panfish are pretty lethargic. If the weatherman is right, we should be getting a few days of sun and an upswing in the temperature. This should put the panfish back on the “feed”, but with the increase in sunlight and temperature, access to your favorite fishing spot could be problematic with the breakup of shoreline ice.
Turkeys are starting to spread out on the landscape and the spring courtship is slowly starting. As the temperatures increase and the days get longer, hunters can look forward to an increase in gobbler activity soon!
Sandhill cranes are returning, geese are pairing up, maple sap is starting to run, all good signs that spring is right around the corner, so get ready!
