Dick Ellis Blog:

Now it starts.  Too much to keep up with in Wisconsin, and that is one nice problem for an outdoorsman. OWO Columnist Wayne Morgenthaler and his son Neal spelled double trouble for two Richland County gobblers after four days of not filling tags. We put the May-June issue of On Wisconsin Outdoors to bed last week with 100,000 copies being distributed statewide. Look for your copy at any Kwik Trip statewide…that’s 400 stores ...

Fishing is really very good and improving daily.  The bass and bluegills spawn is mere days away.  Most fish are starting to move into the shallows in 1-2 ft of water.  Boat traffic for this time of year is still very low due to the cool water temps.        ...

This year will go down as a memorable migration season for many Wisconsin birdwatchers. Warbler watching and backyard feeder activity have been fantastic in all but the far north, largely due to stagnant migration conditions holding birds in place and cool weather reducing availability of natural, insect-based food sources. Scarlet tanagers are sho...

According to my outdoor journals, in spite of increasingly cross looks and sour rumblings from my wife involving lawn-mower maintenance and dandelion removal in the yard – I’ve frittered away a grand total of 25 hours over the past two weeks wandering the forest bottoms and field edges of southern Wisconsin. Magnolia warbler “...

By John Luthens There is something inherently wild about a river island: A hiding place from the currents of the modern world, a sense of adventure that echoes along the swirling shoreline in the age-old voices of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. It doesn’t have to be big, and it needn’t be remote. It becomes that much more adventurou...

Things are finally starting to settle down here in central Wisconsin.  The water temperatures are now in the mid to upper 60’s and the conditions are starting to stabilize on our rivers and streams. Walleye anglers are finding fish in both shallow and deep water locations and this is typical of post spawn fish. Walleyes typically scat...

Warbler migration is nearing peak in south and central Wisconsin after a big flight into the region on May 15: 28 species were reported in Milwaukee, 26 species at Bay Beach Sanctuary in Brown, 24 in Dunn, and similarly good numbers in Dane, Marathon, and elsewhere. The Northwoods saw only a trickle of new warblers until today, May 16, when the fir...
