Explore La Crosse is excited to announce that proving its unique ability to host multi-level race events, Mt. La Crosse will be home this weekend, January 24-26, 2025 for 600+ alpine USSS racers from throughout the Midwest, ranging in both age and skill level. Three levels of racing events will be held simultaneously on the local ski slopes. This is the largest such event in the country and credit goes to Mt. La Crosse for its years’ long effort to make the most of its terrain in order to facilitate such an all-age inclusive event.
The event is also the 19th anniversary of the Dan Nagy Memorial, honoring a widely known member of the Midwest alpine community, a former high school, USSA, and collegiate racer, whose death in a plane accident in 2006 left behind his widow and two young children. Scores of his former teammates and their families will be in attendance.
Events will kick off Friday with the high-speed Super G event for racers ages 14+. This is one of two event that begins at the very summit of the hill at its start house just off Skyline Drive. Spectators may watch racers depart the start house as they travel down the famed Thunderation run in that Super G event. Others will flock to the finish arena to see the athletes navigate the notorious roundhouse transition from Thunderation onto the White House slopes and into the finish arena. Saturday & Sunday, the summit will also kick off the FIS slalom races, which will witness racers navigate a course directly down Damnation, the steepest ski run in the Midwest and the most challenging slalom in the Central Division.
Highlights of the weekend include the tribute to Dan Nagy, three race courses running simultaneously for non-scored younger racers, scored older racers, and the elite FIS (internationally-scored) racers. In addition to the Super G, events will include slalom and giant slalom for all ages.
The event is free and open to spectators. Bleacher seating is available. Participants and their families will gather at the La Crosse Center Saturday for the formal tribute to Dan Nagy and the awards ceremony for the competitors.
