Now it starts.  Too much to keep up with in Wisconsin, and that is one nice problem for an outdoorsman. OWO Columnist Wayne Morgenthaler and his son Neal spelled double trouble for two Richland County gobblers after four days of not filling tags. We put the May-June issue of On Wisconsin Outdoors to bed last week with 100,000 copies being distributed statewide. Look for your copy at any Kwik Trip statewide…that’s 400 stores ...

MADISON -- Four groups and individuals were recognized as 2012 External Partners Award winners at a Department of Natural Resources fisheries management program in late February for their commitment and dedication to Wisconsin Fishing. “We learned a long time ago that managing Wisconsin's outstanding fisheries is a job too big for government...

With Mother Nature still hanging we are seeing plenty of ice on area lakes for fishing, but all the snow could make for an interesting 2013 turkey season. Crappies are still being targeted heavily by area anglers as nice catches are being made in transition areas between deep water haunts and spring spawning areas.  Most of the fish we are fi...

And the snow just keeps coming... With another two days of snow in the forecast, temperatures projected to rise later this week. Travel on lakes still difficult with vehicles and most anglers walking out to fish. It’s hard to believe that a year ago at this time it was 73 degrees and the ice was out by the 21st of March. Some reports of peopl...

Fishing Guide Roger LaPenter from Anglers All (715)-682-5754,  http://www.anglersallwisconsin.com reports: There is still plenty of ice fishing time left for the season. There are reports of many species of fish being caught right out on the bay in Ashland. Perch have been extremely plentiful and are a good size. Also, there are some nice siz...

Good Morning: This past weekend I was at the Madison Fishing Expo where I held my ‘Fishing Basics’ seminar twice on Saturday and Sunday.  During the seminars I educated around 250 youth and just over two hundred parents and adults.  I was amazed at how many adults came to the seminar without kids.  The seminar attendees ...

OSHKOSH, Wis. -- A new online registration process is now available for those interested in taking part in the Sturgeon Guard program. For the past 36 years, the program has relied on volunteers to help guard the prehistoric fish from being harvested as they head up rivers to spawn. “Anyone interested in volunteering can go online and pick t...

Plenty of remaining ice on local waters is boosting our late ice fishing season. Andy Hoppa & Andy Teller with the groups catch from one day. The crappies bite remains steady with very good catches from local waters.  Most of the fish are now migrating towards their tradition spawning areas and can be caught as they move through these ...

By Dave Hraychuck With the close of gamefish season last week, the time to fish late season panfish has arrived! Excellent ice conditions in northwest Wisconsin continues despite last week’s 10 inches of new snow. The flags flew and the food grilled on the barbeque the last weekend of the gamefish season on Burnett County waters. Perch a...

Rain this past weekend followed by 7 inches of snow overnight (3/10/12) will make lake travel difficult on lakes with the slush that has worsened with last week’s warm weather and the weekend rain. Snowmobile highly recommended. Over the weekend bites have been slowing down and fish reports quite due to the incoming weather. Some die-hards fi...

Crappie fishing has slowed but the Gill action has been great. We have been finding gills close to structure in 10 to 20 feet of water. Waxies or Spikes on small jigs have worked well. Walleye action is fair with most fish coming in the low light hours on shiners. Northern action is still great, Large Goldens on Tip-Ups are catching most of the p...

Recent snows have hampered travel on area lakes but if you can get out the fishing has been outstanding. The crappie bite remains the bet I have seen in years.  We are catching not only numbers of fish but really nice big slab crappies as well. Most of the fish we are finding are suspended 2 to 6 feet off the bottom over  20 feet of wate...

**Please always use caution when going on frozen lakes.  View the Wisconsin DNR Ice Fishing tips here. 2/20/13 Reported by Long Lake Bait & Tackle: Fishing has slowed a bit from the nice pace that we had a week ago.  Still catching some nice Walleye after dusk on Large Shiners & Suckers in about 5'-15' off the weed beds.  L...

By Professional Guide Kurt Justice With the exception of Saturday’s high pressure shut down, things have been picking up this past week out on the ice.   Gamefish are lagging from our long early ice season, but even with these fish, a pickup of action has occurred. Perch:  Good.  Some of the best reports surprisingly are...

Input to help guide statewide panfish management plan Anglers and others are invited to share their expectations for fishing for panfish in Wisconsin at more than two dozen meetings across the state in February and March. “We want to hear from the public on what they want from their panfishing experience to help guide us in developing a sta...

Panfish have started to do the traditional February slowdown. It's been a tough bite for bigger fish but they are still possible to catch. Slow down and downsize a little. There are a lot of small crappie and gills being caught providing some fun action. Just remember that these are next year’s nice ones and most of them should be given a cha...

This past week has been very good for all species of panfish. The crappies have been very aggressive. They are suspended in 10 to 16 feet of water about 2 to 4 feet off the bottom. Use your electronics to find them and then run plastics on tiny jigs like the Northland IMPULS mayfly and tapeworm in red and orange to pick up the aggressive feeders. ...

By Professional Guide Dennis Walker BIG GREEN LAKE UPDATE; The Big snow storm has come and is now gone. We got 8 to 10 inches of snow on top of 5 to 6 inches of ice. It was all wet enough to soak up most of the snow. So now with the real cold weather we are now having everything is freezing up. We now have very good ice conditions. This weekend wi...

By Wayne Morgenthaler Fishing was good again on the backwaters but you’re still looking for more fish very late in the day.  The best bite is still the last hour before darkness.  The snow on top has not changed the pattern when the fish are hungry.  Sunfish have been around 6 to 8 inches and the crappies around 10 inches. Th...

With plenty of ice on our local waters many anglers are getting out and searching out new territory as the season progresses. The walleye bite has been good especially after dark. We are seeing our best action on golden shiners run about a foot off the bottom in 3 to 6 feet of water. Northern pike have been really active this winter and this past...

These reports are so much easier to write when fishing is good!  Real cold and high pressure kept the bite down again.  Anglers experience much of the same as they did the week before – fish very negative and not in the mood to bite.  We had been spoiled with all of the thin ice and good fishing.  Actually this isn’t...

The Sno-gypsies snowmobile club held their annual fisheree this past Saturday on Butternut Lake. Cold air temperatures and a high pressure system greeted anglers fishing the early morning hours. The temperatures warmed throughout the day but the fishing success didn't. I talked with anglers, many who brought their families out for a day on the ice...
