The water is starting to warm up with the nicer weather we have been having. The forecast looks great, and this coming week of fishing should really heat up. When the water hits the 50 degree mark, it seems the fish really start to turn on. That includes both largemouth and smallmouth bass, as they prepare for the spawning season. The fish need to...

Walleye fishing has still been good for Ross's Sport Shop Guides, with the lowered daily bag limits on most of the area lakes it takes no time to limit out with nice walleyes. Our guides have been catching walleye in 4 to 15 feet of water depending on the lake we are fishing.  When we are fishing shallow we are looking for mud flats with wood,...

After a little taste of winter late last week (yes, snowflakes on May 15) and the drop in water temperature that comes with the cold, things look good from here on out with a nice gradual warm up for the next 7-10 days.  We will need the warmth and sun to get the weeds growing.  We are weeks behind on both plant growth above and below the...

There’s some Very Good Fishing Going on Out There Hi Folks --  There’s some very good fishing going on out there as we follow the spawn bite around from lake to lake.  Despite the foul weather and high winds this past week, fish continued to bite.  It got a little tougher Thursday and Friday, but we still managed...

Well, the smelt run is all over with for Ashland, everyone. Roger LaPenter, proprietor of Anglers All, said there was no action at all Saturday night. He believes the run has ended for the season on this side of Chequamegon Bay. Roger advises smelters to try their luck over in Washburn, up in Cornucopia, or farther along the Lake Superior sho...

This past week was cold and the lake didn’t warm up too much.  We also 5 inches of rain, which kept the fishing action low.  The forecast for this week is sunshine and decent temps so the water should continue to warm and increase the fishing opportunities.   Smallmouth bass can be caught on either a small pink headed hai...

Aside from rain and wind early this week, the forecast indicates we might finally break the cool weather barrier! The extended forecast shows no lows temperatures less than 40 degrees for the next two weeks and highs in the 60s and 70s. “Fishing conditions improved appreciably in the last 10 days,” says Pat at Happy Hooker, &ldquo...

Delavan Lake continues to busy with fishermen.  With the 5 inches of rain this week and a lake fly hatch the fishing has slowed a bit and the numbers from last week have been reduced a little.  With the warm weather predicted for this weed it should ignite the bite. Some walleyes are being caught off the main lake points in 26-28 ft of w...

The smelt are still running, but the run has slowed considerably. Not very many people were out at Bayview Park along U.S. Highway 2, also known as Pamida Beach. “They got very little down there last night,” said Roger LaPenter, proprietor of Anglers All. Roger said he only netted about 90 lbs. of the little silver devils last night be...

On Wisconsin Outdoors writer extraordinaire John Luthens took his nephew on his first Lake Winnebago crappie expedition.  Do you think maybe Indigo Thede, 10, of Oshkosh enjoyed landing his first Lake Winnebago crappie?

Steve Ellis, brother of OWO publisher, found good fishing on walleyes and this released smallmouth bass in both weeds and rocks in Iron county.  He wouldn’t however, tell his brother the name of the lake, so I could blab it to all of you. The fish were all taken bait casting.

It's been a little soggy in the North Woods the last couple of weeks but battling the high water between rain drops has been rewarding most anglers with good fishing. Our guides at Ross's Sport Shop are in the Walleye mode right now and the Walleye are treating our clients right, our boats have been averaging 30 walleyes per 4 hour trip with some ...

Thanks to some decent weather, the water is starting to warm up nicely. The fish are slowly starting to put the feed bag on and becoming more active. With that said, still working the bait slow is going to get more bites than working a bait aggressively right now.  The walleyes are still pushing into the shallows in the evening and ...

The smelt are still running! People netted a good amount of smelt again last night in Ashland. However, not as many people were out at Bayview Park along U.S. Highway 2, also known as Pamida Beach. One smelter who went there said he was out until 3 a.m. and only got 18 smelt. The smelt ran from about 9 p.m. and quit before 2 in the morning, said A...

Steve Suman This year’s transition from winter to spring is a slow one in the North Woods, delayed at every turn. This week continues the trend, with mild days, cool nights, and chances for rain and thunderstorms on tap nearly every day. Trees are budding, plants are blooming, birds are singing – the signs are there, even if the temper...

Great news, folks! The smelt are definitely running!! People netted a fair amount of smelt last night on the far-east side of town and at Bayview Park along U.S. Highway 2, also known as Pamida Beach. Experienced fishing guide and Anglers All proprietor Roger LaPenter said the run appears to be picking up and he expects it to continue. “It s...

Last year the ice went out of Chequamegon Bay on May 13, tyi...

Delavan Lake is warming nicely and the fishing is improving.  What a difference a week makes.  Largemouth bass fishing is on fire.  And other species are turning on as well. Largemouth bass are in pre-spawn mode and are aggressively hitting chrome/blue and chrome/black rattle traps.  Look for the fish by the Lake Lawn Golf cour...

With the warmer weather making an appearance this week, the fishing has improved immensely.  There are catches of 15-30 smallmouth in a 5 hour trip available.  The water is warming and the fish are becoming much more active. Smallmouth bass can be caught on either a small pink headed hair jig or a football head jig with a root beer color...

Steve Suman Ice covered most Hayward area lakes for the fishing opener this past weekend, but moderate temperatures made for pleasant fishing. The forecast for this week includes a mix of warm temperatures, sunshine, rain, and light wind that should quickly address any remaining ice issues. “Opening weekend conditions were about the same as...

Although there is some open water in various spots along Ashland’s shoreline, there is still too much ice out there on Chequamegon Bay for the smelt to start their spawning run. Ashland’s “smelt run” normally starts around the third or fourth week in April, shortly after ice-out on the bay, and lasts only 12-14 days. Northe...
