By Wayne Morgenthaler The rains have settled down but most of the big trout streams are too dirty to fish unless you go to the headwaters.  The smaller streams have cleared out and still provide good action.  If I am fishing waters that let me keep trout, then I like to fish with night crawlers with a small split shot.  Panther Mart...

Fishing overall has been average for this time of year.  The fluctuating air and water temps has been a challenge.  The best bite on the lake remains smallmouth bass. Hopefully with some stable weather and warm days, it will create some really good fishing in the coming weeks. Smallmouth bass are being caught around their spawning flats....

The shallows on Delavan Lake have been inundated with the worst green slime I’ve seen in years.  Fishing the shallow weeds has proven to be a very challenging endeavor.  If you can remove the weeds after nearly every cast, the fish are there, but be prepared for a hassle. Largemouth bass are in the shallows in 5-8 ft of water. ...

Despite waking up to snow on the ground (5/19) and cold winds, mild temps look to return by the weekend. It just seems like a long way off when you are sitting in a boat now!The past few days of wind and cold temps have slowed fishing, pushing some species out of the shallows. With forecasted highs only reaching high 60’s to low 70’s ...

Lake Geneva fishing is starting to improve.  By Memorial Day it should be getting very good.  The current water temperature is about 55 degrees so the fish are still a bit sluggish but with warmer weather the bite will improve every day. Smallmouth bass are still in pre-spawn.  They are cruising their spawning flats in 8-12 ft of wa...

Delavan lake has been relatively slow for this time of year.  The warm weather during the day has been great, but the nights have remained cool slowing the bite a bit.  There has been extreme weed growth by north shore and by the dam. Largemouth bass has been best in 5-6 ft of water in front of Lake Lawn Lodge.   You can either...

A big swing in the weather from highs of near 80 deg. last week, to rain, sleet and even some snow (today 5-12). Daily changes in temps, wind and cloud cover meant anglers needed to be on the move to find their quarry, especially walleye.Walleye: Good. Day to day things are changing. The warmer days with cloud cover brings walleyes into shallow w...

With the warming water, the fishing has started to improve.  Most of the lake last week was around 60 degrees on the surface.  Both the largemouth and walleyes have become active. Largemouth bass are positioned in 2-6 ft of water.  Most of my success last week came from the boat launch channel to Lake Lawn golf course.  I was f...

With a few warm days Lake Geneva has started to produce some fish in the main portions of the lake.  The smallmouth bass should be spawning in the next two weeks with the largemouth bass and bluegills to follow.  The best time to fish Lake Geneva is Memorial Day through the second week of June. Largemouth bass are being caught in 3-4 ft ...

Despite beautiful weather, the opener of the 2015 gamefish season was not as wonderful as we hoped. At least we had open water for the opener and some walleyes did get caught, just not in the overall numbers or by as many anglers as expected.Walleyes: Fair. Some anglers found good success, but as a whole a lot of time went into not a lot of fish fo...

Opening Day is finally here.  Delavan Lake was a complete a zoo on Saturday.  By 6:00 a.m. the boat launch was just about full.  The pressure on the lake appears to be continuing into 2015.  Overall fishing was rather slow, some people did have success once they found some active fish. Crappie action has been okay in the Lake L...

Lake Geneva has an extremely cold water temperature this time of year and the water clarity is very high.  This is typical for Opening day of fishing season but it doesn’t always make for the best fishing. Largemouth bass are active in Abbey Harbor or in Trinkes Bay.  They can be caught on split shot rigged nightcrawlers or a green...

Forecasts promise great weather heading into Wisconsin’s May 2 game fish opener this weekend. A few days indicate minimal chances of rain, but all show high temperatures in the 60- to 70-degree range! Get your tackle ready – and make sure you have a current license! “Regulation changes brought good news for anglers,” says P...

We have had great walleye action this past week in both Central Wisconsin and on Green Bay and its tributaries.  The BIG Lake has been producing numbers of large fish that average 26 to 30 inches long!!!  The river has been producing heavy numbers of fish in the 14 to 18 inch range with a few surpassing the 20 inch mark....

Steve Suman The forecast for this week should bring a smile to anyone in Hayward and the North Woods – warm and sunny, highs in the mid 60s, and a few minimal chances for rain showers. This is an excellent week to prepare for the May 2 fishing opener! “Open water spurred some panfish anglers to get on the lakes,” says Pat at&nbs...

The pond behind the shop went ice free on 4/10.  Typically this means Lake Minocqua will be ice free in 7-10 days.  Thanks to temps cracking 70 degrees, lots of sun and high winds, Lake Minocqua is more than 50% ice free already.  Many other lakes are already open and with a forecast of daytime highs in the 50’s and 60's, con...

The snow is gone for now, but I am sure we might get a little more.  The water level is very low in the streams and lakes.  Trout fishing is catch and release for a while.  With the water being low, the best fishing is on small streams during the day.  The big three streams for Richland County are Mill Creek, Pin...

Great action in the central Wisconsin area for anglers as the y head out to open water for the first few times of the season. The walleye bite (despite low water) has been exceptionally good so far this season with not only numbers of fish but some real lunkers too.  Most of the action has been in the deeper pools on the...

Steve Suman Ice is deteriorating on North Wood’s lakes, an encouraging sign of spring, yet we had a four-inch snowfall Easter Sunday night! Additional “precipitation” in the forecast this week will be short-lived, with high temperatures in the 40- to 60-degree range. “This year,” says Pat at Happy Hooker, &ldquo...

Following a weekend of several reports of anglers breaking thought…one needing rescue, thankfully no fatalities as earlier rumored…ice fishing is nearly over for the season.  Big Arbor Vitae still holds fishable ice on the south shore as of today (4/7) as do a few other protected bays, but, with ice thickness of 11-14’ of ...

As much as I hate to say it our ice fishing season has come to an end.  We were out this past weekend for one last trip and had a great outing catching jumbo perch.  The bite was fast and furious on large jigging spoons and jigging Raps in 12 to 18 feet of water.  But with deteriorating ice conditions and recent warm weather and rain...
