Great action in the central Wisconsin area for anglers as the y head out to open water for the first few times of the season.

The walleye bite (despite low water) has been exceptionally good so far this season with not only numbers of fish but some real lunkers too.  Most of the action has been in the deeper pools on the main river system.  By targeting water depths of 14 to 20 feet we have been able to take advantage of remaining fish that are still holding in their traditional wintering pools.  Most of these fish are the smaller males that run anywhere from 12 to 17 inches but there are a lot of them.    If you are interested in getting into the larger fish, they are for the most part found by working shallower locations. I typically target water depths of 3 to 8 feet when searching for big spring walleyes.  Jig and minnow combinations work as well as do diving crankbaits like Rapala Shad Raps and Berkley Flicker Shads.

The spring steelhead run is underway on the Lake Michigan tributaries, and if this is something that you have never done you need to add it to your bucket list. With numerous feeder streams to Lake Michigan that are just loaded with fish, it is hard to decide just where to start.  Most of the action takes place in the deeper pools on the tributaries, but when the spawn really gets going the steelhead will move up to the shallow rifles (less than foot deep) and you can actually see them in the water.

Targeting these fish isn’t hard either as they will take a variety of baits and lures. The most common tactic is running spawn sacs along the bottom on a small octopus hook.  Another method is running the spawn sac under a float and drifting it through the hole.  Some guys prefer to not run live bait at all and go with lures, like Little Cleo’s or spinners.  The traditional guys like presenting small yarn flies and imitation spawn sacs on a fly rod with the utmost precise presentation.  No matter how you do it, once you hook into a spring steelhead, it is like hooking into a freight train.  You had better hang on, because a battle is about to begin that you will not soon forget.
