Ice Fishing in Wisconsin

Well, some of the small lakes and some bays have safe ice.  Be sure to keep checking the thickness as you go out to your favorite spot.  A good solid 4 inches will support one man and 6-8” will support a man and an ATV.  Remember to bring a rope—you could save a friend.  Be sure to go with a buddy and bring a cell ...

By Professional Guide Joe Brezinski Many of our area lakes opened back up this week due to the warm weather the past weekend. Some of the small lakes remained frozen but anyone trying to venture out should proceed with extreme caution. Some shallow areas may experience 3 inches of ice only to reduce to an inch a couple feet away. Air temps should ...

Not much for ice yet.  There were reports of some fishermen out on Turtle Lake and Prairie Lake.  They are jumping the gun.  I’m as anxious as anyone to get out there ice fishing, but this week’s warm weather and rain haven’t helped the ice form and safety is a real concern. It’s best to hold off and get yo...

The ice fishing season has started in the Phillips WI area with 2 to 3 inches of ice covering most of the lakes shorelines. I would not recommend venturing far on the ice yet but fishermen are going out on the shallower shorelines and setting tip-ups for Walleye and Pike. The bite has been good so far. Most fishermen are reporting picking up a few ...

Posted On September 15, 2012 Everyone in the fishing industry will be deeply saddened to learn that Paul Grahl and his wife Johanna were killed on Friday night in a head-on collision not far from their home in Campbellsport, Wisconsin. Paul and Johanna's 13-year-old-daughter Ester was also seriously injured in the accident and taken to Children's...

By Denny Murawska It is coveted as a food of kings, and certain grades are valued as one would calculate the price of gold. The best in the world can sell for over $23,000 per kilogram, which is a shade over two pounds. This precious commodity is caviar, and few of us get to taste the really good stuff. Beluga caviar comes from a type of sturgeon...

Dick Ellis If a watched pot will never boil, these tip-up flags ready to trip on the Minocqua Chain in Oneida County didn’t stand a chance.  Which led to a serious question Thursday as the curtain began to fall on the inland gamefish season. Who cares?Forty-one degrees said the mercury. The sun was dropping in the southwest against bril...

By Dick Ellis               The Big Eau Pleine miniature mountain range continued to grow as Phil Schweik rode the power auger through 20 inches of hardwater on the 7,000 acre reservoir south of Wausau.  First light had brought with it just a new kind of blindness as a daw...

By Dick Ellis Bruce Keldahl kneels on the ice of Lake Mendota, sends the jig south on the “hanger-rig” express through the augured hole and 70 feet of water, then watches the screen of his electronics as intensely as the rest of us might have watched a 4th and 26 the Sunday before.  Keldahl has only assumed the position of the ice...

By Dick Ellis The battle here on the Sawyer County hardwater was as much with the January elements as with this roving band of big crappies being picked off one by one in an angler’s game of hit and run..  Sitting still over an augured hole or two would work.  The fish will come by again eventually. But the stationary ambush is not...

By Chris Powell Well it’s just about that time of year to go hit the ice, and here in northwest Wisconsin, we have bountiful opportunities to hit ice fishing gold. First ice around here is usually hot. Lakes such as Marshmiller, Otter, the Chetek Chain, Menomin, and Miller Dam are popular with local anglers in search of a good meal of bluegi...

By Bill Whiteside Everyone knows that first ice can be the best fishing they have all winter. Some of us waiting all summer for hard water and others just putting away their open water equipment are fired up to fish the new ice fishing season. First ice means you haven’t fished since last ice, so you have a lot of things to think about. You...
