Black, minority Trump supporters censored by Gannett, other media at 2020 RNC Convention. Expect the same as Milwaukee hosts 2024 RNC Convention. Look back four years Wisconsin, to compare and contrast Gannett’s corrupt coverage of the 2020 Republican and Democratic National Conventions to know what to expect July 15-18 when the nation’s eyes rest on Milwaukee, home of the 2024 RNC convention.  The DNC will showcase its conventi...

MILWAUKEE SHERIFF DAVID CLARKE URGES CITIZENS TO TAKE CERTIFIED SAFETY COURSE, DEFEND THEMSELVES

1-24-2013

As I wait for my own concealed carry permit to arrive, I was pleased to hear Milwaukee Sheriff David Clarke’s Public Service Announcement (PSA) on radio stations urging people to take the necessary steps to properly defend themselves.  The copy of the PSA is posted below, with an audio link below that. We also post this under “Firearms”.

“I'm Sheriff David Clarke, and I want to talk to you about something personal. Your safety. It's no longer a spectator sport, I need you in the game. But are you ready?

With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option.

You could beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back. But are you prepared?

Consider taking a certified safety course in handling a firearm so you can defend yourself until we can get there.

You have a duty to protect yourself and your family. We're partners now. Can I count on you?”

Click here to listen to Sheriff’s Clarke’s PSA as aired on the Jay Weber show on WISN and other Milwaukee radio stations.

A large cougar was treed and photographed in Sawyer County this week after a rabbit hunter stumbled on a track too big for a bobcat and sent the chase wheel in motion. He called a friend who had a friend in Dunn County who had the dogs to tree the cat, which eventually posed for photos like a nice kitty.  See the photos under “Outdoor News”.  Is it just me?  Or, assuming you’re hunting alone now in the way back of Wisconsin, wouldn’t you much rather run into a bear than a 170 pound cougar?  Just sayin...

We post the next “On the Trapline with Arnie Groehler” under “Trapping”.  Arnold is his usual entertaining self as he leaves the field and shows us how to prepare a beaver and raccoons in the fur shed.  I’ve said it before, but if you have not had a chance to read Groehler’s stories, even if you’re not a trapper, browse back and enjoy yourself.

Other OWO columnists that came in with brand new stories include Darrell Pendergrass under “Ice Fishing”, where he shoots the bull with the boys on the hardwater of Lake Superior country; John Luthens under “Inland Fishing”, who receives a hot tip from a local legend and does some open water walleye fishing on the Fox; and Robb Manning, who takes a close look at the Mernickle Holsters for his Concealed Carry column. We post it under “Firearms”.

Read cold-water fishing tactics and reports from across Wisconsin including Price County, Rice Lake, Washburn County, Ashland, central Wisconsin, Minocqua and elsewhere.  My host last week on the Milwaukee Harbor, Jim Olsson, writes up a short how-to piece to get you started safely in the frigid weather to successfully target browns and other Great Lakes critters.

Free kids fishing clinics will be held in many areas of Wisconsin in the coming weeks.  Either connect with “Inland Fishing” for details or call Theresa Stabo at 608-266-2272 or Kim Anderson at 608-261-6431 direct.

Are you a sled speed freak?  Maybe you don’t know that this Saturday, January 26, at the Richland County Wisconsin Fairgrounds, the ‘Screamin Half Mile’ is ready to be unleashed.  Connect with “Explore Wisconsin-Richland County”.  It’s being billed as ‘The Final Battle on Ice”.  Hot laps begin at 9:00 am with racing at 11:00.

The state Natural Resources Board today approved the Department of Natural Resources’ recommendation to offer just over 8,500 bear harvest permits for the 2013 Wisconsin black bear season.

“We will issue 8,560 permits for the upcoming season with a harvest goal of 4,000 bears,” said Kevin Wallenfang, DNR big game ecologist. “These numbers are slightly reduced compared to 2012, but will offer above average harvest opportunities.”

Get the whole story under “Outdoor News”. Under “Upland Game”, speaking of permits, the DNR issued 135,155 permits for the spring turkey hunt. If you forgot to apply, which I usually do but didn’t, (I’m going period 2, Zone 1) there will be plenty left over-the-counter. Read the details on what zones go up for sale and when.

Scan “Outdoor News” too and read too much to talk about here.  But you will always find Warden Wires, which this week includes an officer answering a call from a Vernon County farmer of two eagles in distress in his silo. The birds turn out to be young red tailed hawks and the warden with help from the farmer saves the day. Like I said, browse the section and pick out what you like.

If you read last week’s “Dick Trips” you know that we went back to a 2005 trip on the Lake Mendota January hardwater for deep water perch. This week, we go back and go shallow, to a trip in 2007 when the target was shallow Monona Bay big gills. You can keep tabs locally on both species and both lakes with the contact information we have for you with the story. And most importantly...

You can plan to go yourself.

Shoot straight.  Thanks for connecting with On Wisconsin Outdoors.
