The only thing more powerful than the 179-pound, 80-inch sturgeon wrestled out of Lake Winnebago by Sherwood’s Pete Vanderwielen on opening day of the 2013 Sturgeon Spearing Season was the undeniable bond among the families and their friends who filled the thousands of heated ice shanties scattered in every direction. In the middle of a very busy Calumet County lake community was Warden Mike Disher, handling the sturgeon season, a snowmobile rescue, traffic violations and a lot more.
