Warden Wire- FAQ: Hunting, hunter safety

Frequently Asked Questions

By: Bureau of Law Enforcement

October 23, 2012

Here are answers to some recent most frequently asked law enforcement questions taken by the DNR Call Center.

The Call Center is staffed daily, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m., and offers bilingual service in Spanish and Hmong. The number is 1-888-936-7463.

Question 1: Was the December antlerless hunt cancelled, too?

Answer: The December antlerless hunt will still take place this year. The early October hunt was cancelled.

Question 2: I am looking for a hunter education course for my child. I cannot find anything. Can you help me?

Answer: Hunter education courses are taught by volunteers. You will find fewer and fewer options when you get closer to the November gun-deer hunting season. You can keep checking the website to see if anything comes available. If you leave the county section blank on the search function, it will provide you everything statewide. If you are unable to find a class before the gun-deer season starts, you always have the option to hunt under the mentor program. Here is the information on this program: http://dnr.wi.gov/education/outdoorskills/mentor.html.

Question 3: I completed the online hunter safety education course. How do I sign up for a field day?

Answer: Available hunter education field days may be found on the Wisconsin DNR website by searching keyword: Hunter Safety. Click the “Find a Class” button. In the drop down menu, select “Hunter Ed CD/Internet.” Due to limited availability at this time of the year, it is recommended to not make a selection in the county drop-down menu, which will show all available field days throughout the state. At the conclusion of the field day, you will take two exams - one written and one practical. Please note: You cannot join in on a traditional hunter education classroom field day.
