By: Oshkosh, Peshtigo & Ashland warden teams

Oshkosh warden team

Warden Jason Higgins of Oshkosh assisted the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department with a boat accident on the Fox River. The boat had sunk and numerous buoys were placed around the boat due to it not being able to be removed until the following morning. No one was injured in the accident.

Warden Alan Erickson of Fond du Lac completed an investigation which started with a report of an untagged otter in a freezer. In conclusion of the investigation, five trapping related citations totaling just under $1,500 were issued to the subject and multiple furs were seized.

Warden Ryan Propson of Appleton gave presentations at three safety courses and a youth and disabled gun hunt, and helped with a Learn to Pheasant hunt program.

Peshtigo warden team

Warden Matt Meade of Crivitz and Warden Dave Oginski Jr. arrived on scene of an all-terrain vehicle versus a vehicle in the township of Lake. An ATV operator failed to come to a stop at a stop sign and collided with a pick-up truck. The operator of the ATV died on the scene and his passenger was transported to a local hospital.

Warden Mark Schraufnagel of Shawano worked with the White Clay Lake Sportsman’s Club conducting a pheasant learn-to-hunt event. The event went very well and the club is planning to hold it again next year.

Warden Schraufnagel investigated a fatal boating accident on Korth Lake. The victim had been fishing on the lake and fell out of the boat while attempting to anchor. The victim was not wearing a life jacket. Warden Schraufnagel utilized side scan sonar on his patrol boat to assist the dive team in locating the victim.

Warden Horne assisted the State Patrol, Shawano Sheriff’s Department, and Shawano Police Department with chasing down a suspect who ran from a trooper and swam across the Wolf River in an attempt to escape. Suspect was apprehended after a short foot chase.

Warden Horne attended the J&H Youth and Ladies Day. Participants were given the opportunity to fire shotguns, BB guns, fly-fish, trout fish in a pond, rock climb and try other outdoor events with instructors. About 350 women and kids participated.

Ashland warden team

Warden Brad Biser of Brule participated in an aquatic invasive group check on Lake Namakagon with Ashland Team Wardens during a Musky fishing tournament. More than 200 boats were involved in the event and there was good compliance with aquatic invasive transportation regulations.

Warden Jill Schartner of Drummond began an investigation when a woman called to report she had just heard someone shooting a bow from a passing vehicle. She said she heard this while sitting on her bow stand. During the investigation Schartner located a gut pile, the arrow used to harvest a doe and the individuals who were involved. Schartner then requested Deputy Renz from the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Department to assist with the interviews at which time all three individuals admitted to their wrong-doing and the bow and doe were seized. Charges are pending.
