Lower Chippewa warden team
Warden Adam Hanna of Neillsville responded to a forest fire in Eau Claire County in October. An investigation revealed that the fire was started by an individual that was burning plastic coating off of stolen copper wire. The individual was eventually apprehended after vehicle pursuits by Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office, Warden Shaun Deeney (Chippewa Falls), and Altoona Police Department.
Warden Adam Hanna of Neillsville attended the West Central Clark County Hunt for Hunters with Disabilities where coordinators Dale and Mary Petkovsek were presented with the DNR Outstanding Service Award.
Warden Hanna assisted the Neillsville Police Department who were in a pursuit with a suspect with an arrest warrant. The man fled on foot into a cornfield outside of town. Neillsville PD, DNR, and Clark County Sheriff’s office personnel set up a perimeter and conducted a drive on the cornfield. The suspect flushed out to Warden Hanna where he was taken into custody.
Wardens Hanna and Jake Donar (Black River Falls) were investigating an ATV complaint in Clark County when they came upon two gut piles near an oversized pile of corn, apples and salt blocks. An investigation led to the discovery of two butchered, untagged, unregistered deer and a crossbow with a flashlight zip-tied to it. Criminal charges are pending.
Chippewa County
With the assistance of the Rusk County Sheriff’s Department, Wardens Deeney and Warden Supervisor Scott Bowe, of Ladysmith, contacted four subjects who were seen walking in a hay field after shots were reported in that area after dark. The investigation revealed that the men shined a deer with headlights and fired both rifle and handgun rounds at the animal. Criminal charges are pending.
A citizen in Chippewa Falls reported seeing the passenger of a moving car suddenly appear through the sunroof and draw back a bow on a deer. The deer was standing on the side of a heavily travelled paved road. Warden Deeney later found the subjects involved and took enforcement action for hunting from the road with a motor vehicle.
Eau Claire County
Warden Scott Thiede of Eau Claire assisted by Warden Ken Thomson of Fall Creek, Recruit Warden Tim Werner, and Warden Supervisor Jeremy Peery, all of Eau Claire, conducted a Learn to Hunt event for novice hunters at the Eau Claire Rod & Gun Club. Hmong hunters and their mentors enjoyed the classroom presentations, sighting their .22 rifles at the range, and then hunting squirrels on nearby county forest property.
Warden Thomson assisted with a learn-to-trap class at Wild Land School in Fall Creek. Twenty students spent the day learning about trapping and fur bearer ecology. Students received training from Wisconsin Trappers Association Instructors and Thomson spoke about the trapping laws.
Trempealeau County
Warden Robin Barnhardt, of Osseo, attended the Pheasants Forever Youth Hunt event near Osseo. Thirty novice hunters attended the event, which included firearm safety training, clay pigeon shooting, and the opportunity to hunt pheasants with dogs. Many of the new hunters reported they bagged a bird or two during the event.
Jackson County
Warden Jake Donar of Black River Falls investigated a complaint of hunter harassment and the illegal operation of a vehicle on state land. Warden Donar located the suspect in this case and enforcement action was taken.
