Warden Blotter - September 26, 2012, Peshtigo-area team

By: Peshtigo-Area Conservation Warden Team

Northern Marinette County

Warden Dave Oginski Jr. responded to a 911 call of person buried in a cliff on the Peshtigo River. Warden Oginski and Marinette County Sheriff’s deputies responded and found three males walking out of the woods. It turned out that the individuals were digging in the high sand cliffs on the Peshtigo River and had 6 feet of sand bank come down on top of them. Two of them were completely buried. The third male dug out one, and then the two of them dug out the third male. All three individuals are lucky to be alive.

Warden Oginski received a complaint from the Marinette Police Department about four individuals tearing up the bed of the bay of Green Bay near Red Arrow Park. Significant damage was done with 4x4 trucks to the area. All four individuals were located and enforcement action was taken.

Southern Marinette County

Wardens Mark Schraufnagel of Shawano and Matt Meade of Crivitz took kids fishing at COPS Summer Camp for Kids near East Troy. One youngster landed a nice 14” largemouth bass. The event is an outdoor camp for the families of law enforcement officers who were killed in the line of duty.

Northern Oconto County

Warden Joe Paul of Lakewood spent most of the month assisting U.S. Forest Service and Department of Criminal Investigations with drug trafficking organization investigations. Seven arrests were made; more than 100 pounds of processed marijuana was seized in addition to eradicating thousands of plants grown on public lands in Oconto County.

Warden Paul taught at a hunter education class in Townsend and a trapper education class in Pound.

Southern Oconto County

Warden Mike Stahl of Oconto Falls responded to a call of a person burning asphalt siding. Went to scene and found person was burning siding but not the asphalt variety. What he was burning was still illegal. Man warned for his actions and the burning laws were explained to him. Illegal burning can result in fines up to $25,000 a day.

Eastern Shawano County

Warden Schraufnagel and the rest of the Peshtigo Team assisted in surveillance, securing, and eradicating several marijuana grows in the Nicolet National Forest in Oconto County.

Warden Schraufnagel received a complaint from the Sheriff’s Dept. of a three-wheel all terrain vehicle operating in the city of Shawano at high speeds. Warden Schraufnagel checked the area and talked to witnesses that stated the ATV was traveling over 50 mph. Warden Schraufnagel located the operator. In addition to operating on city streets at high speeds the ATV was not registered and did not have a license plate. Enforcement action was taken.

Warden Schraufnagel and Jim Horne of Shawano investigated a complaint of a small alligator on Legend Lake in Menominee County. The wardens checked the area and did observe a few snapping turtles but no alligator.

Western Shawano County

Warden Horne was called to a fatal boat accident on the Wolf River in Menominee County. The investigation showed the victim had fallen out of a raft in a series of rapids.
