New Deck Crawfish River

MADISON – Bridges over three major rivers that the Glacial Drumlin State Trail crosses will remain closed longer than originally anticipated after state officials discovered that the structure under the decking was in worse condition than expected.

Wisconsin state park officials say the bridges over the Rock and Crawfish rivers and Koshkonong Creek will remain closed through the Memorial Day weekend.

Work on the bridge over the Crawfish River was progressing this week, and state park officials said it is possible that bridge would reopen shortly after Memorial Day. The Rock and Koshkonong bridges will be closed into June. The length of closure will depend on how long it takes to acquire the custom materials necessary to make the repairs.

People can check the DNR website later this week for an update by searching for “Glacial Drumlin,” and then clicking on the link for “current conditions.”

The Glacial Drumlin State T rail stretches for 52 miles through farmlands and glacial topography, traveling through 10 small towns, flanked by Cottage Grove in Dane County and Waukesha in Waukesha County.
Work on a group of four bridges on the paved portion of the eastern end of the trail in Waukesha County has been completed and the paved portion of trail is open for use. Work on seven other bridges west of the Village of Dousman in Waukesha and eastern Jefferson County continues; however the entire trail from Jefferson to Waukesha will be open for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

During the week of May 27 the entire eastern portion of the trail from Jefferson to Waukesha will remain open for use. The week of June 3 the first bridge west of Pioneer Road near the Village of Sullivan will be removed which will require the trail to be closed between Pioneer Road and Hwy 18 for two to three days.
Signs are posted at trail heads of the closed section, along with maps that people can view to find alternative routes. Brigit Brown, state trails coordinator for the Department of Natural Resources, said there will not be designated trail detours, because the DNR does not have authority to designate routes on public roadways. People can also check for Glacial Drumlin current conditions on the DNR website.

For more information check the "current conditions" link on the Glacial Drumlin State Trail page of the DNR website or call 920-648-8774 for the western part of the trail or 262-646-4421 for the eastern side.
