Ice, road conditions delay trout stocking in some northern lakes

MADISON - Ice cover and road conditions mean that some lakes in northern Wisconsin will not be stocked with catchable size trout before the May 4 opening day of the inland fishing season.

Department of Natural Resources fisheries crews had hoped to have the stocking done in time for the opener but continuing ice cover on the lakes and difficult conditions at the lake access have delayed some stocking, says David Giehtbrock, DNR statewide hatchery production manager.

“As soon as conditions allow, we will stock the remaining fish into these waters,” Giehtbrock says. “The upside is these fish continue to grow bigger at our state fish hatcheries and will be ready for catching when conditions improve.”

DNR will post an update on its website when all of catchable trout stocking is complete.

The more than two dozen lakes and spring ponds where stocking will be delayed are listed below.

  • Ashland County: Cammerer Lake, Bay Spring, Pole Lake
  • Barron County: Little Granite Lake
  • Bayfield County: Bearsdale Springs, Little Star Lake, Nymphia Lake, Shunenberg Springs
  • Chippewa County: Bradely Lake, Dark Lake
  • Douglas County: Park Creek Pond
  • Florence County: Edith Lake, Lost Lake
  • Iron County: Plunkett Lake, Weber Lake
  • Langlade County: Remington Pond
  • Lincoln County: Larson Lake, Mirror Lake
  • Oneida County: Hawk Lake, Mercer Springs
  • Price County: Camp Four Springs
  • Sawyer County: Ashegon Lake
  • Taylor County: Camp 8 Flowage
  • Washburn County: Camp Lake
  • Vilas County: Allequash Springs, Stevenson Creek Flowage, Stormy Lake
