Warden Blotter: Vehicle and snowmobile crashes among southern cases

Published: March 13, 2013

Fishing without license and litter cases also on the recent case list

Racine, Kenosha and Walworth counties

Warden Randy Dunkel of Racine County responded to a report of a spill in North Cape. Dunkel found a semitrailer truck was attempting to back a trailer into a loading dock that had a very steep grade. The fuel tank for the refrigerator on the trailer clipped the ground and ripped off the valve at the bottom of the tank resulting in the spill of 30 gallons of diesel. Most of the spill was contained in the floor drain with some remaining in the parking lot.

Warden Kyle Dilley and Deputy Warden Gabrielson contacted a group of ice fishermen on Center Lake. All three fishermen were found to have smoked marijuana prior to contact with the wardens. One fisherman was found to be fishing without a license, and another was found to be fishing with unattended lines. Citations were issued.

Warden Mike Katzenberg of Delevan - Walworth County and Warden Juan Gomez investigated a fatal snowmobile accident that occurred in the Town of Whitewater. The individual was operating the snowmobile in his yard without wearing a helmet and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Alcohol and speed were two contributing factors.

Richland, Iowa, Crawford, Grant and Lafayette counties

Warden Dave Youngquist of Spring Green received information from Warden Paul Nell of Horicon about a turkey that did not get registered last spring after it was shot in Lafayette County. Youngquist contacted the hunter who shot a tom turkey in Lafayette County in April of 2012 and never registered it. A citation was issued.

Wardens Mike Nice of Richland Center and Deputy Warden Mike Williams assisted Warden Cody Adams of Prairie du Chien with a Hotline call on the Mississippi River regarding an overbagging complaint. Wardens located the individual on the ice that was known to have caught and kept a limit of panfish in the morning and returned to continue to catch a second limit of fish in the afternoon. The suspect also did the same thing earlier in the week. Charges are pending.

Sauk and Columbia counties

Warden David Horzewski of Reedsburg assisted with two vehicles in the ditch due to the snow and slippery roads at Wegner Road and County V. Warden Horzewski called for a tow truck and provided light coverage for the vehicles and tow truck operator.

Warden David Horzewski of Reedsburg assisted with a roll-over accident on Gavin Road, east of Kelley Road. Warden Horzewski was the first on the scene of a one-car roll-over accident where the person was inside the vehicle which was on its side. The driver sustained internal injuries and the Reedsburg Fire Department had to remove the top of the vehicle for EMS personnel to remove the driver. Horzewski assisted at the accident scene.

Warden David Horzewski of Reedsburg received a complaint from a fisherman regarding an ice shelter that had litter around it. The complainant stated that the same litter was around the ice shelter when it was located in another location on the lake as well. Warden Horzewski located the ice shelter and contacted the name and number attached to the side. Horzewski spoke with the owner and then the user of the ice shelter. Horzewski advised the subject that a litter citation would be issued for broken glass, beer bottles, aluminum beer cans, cardboard and .40 caliber shell casings on the ice around the ice shelter.
