Lac du Flambeau Event on 5 Vilas County Lakes

If you are planning on being on the ice in Vilas County Saturday, you need to be aware of a Lac du Flambeau musky spearing tournament set for five county lakes.

The DNR conservation wardens are working with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission to make sure everyone stays safe enjoying their outdoor fun this weekend. And, wardens remind all to please remain aware of changing ice conditions statewide as Wisconsin's seasons enter the transition period.

If you’re wondering, the answer is yes, these types of Lac du Flambeau spearing tournaments are legal under federal treaties. Who enforces the rules? It’s a cooperative effort by the DNR and tribal wardens.

DNR Deputy Chief Karl Brooks says one thing the two warden crews are doing together is making sure the spearing holes are clearly marked. Brooks says that’s to make sure everyone knows where these holes are – tourney competitors and those not participating.

The DNR also is continuing efforts to work cooperatively with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission and the Lac du Flambeau tribe to manage the fishery within the Ceded Territory. The department has issued a request to the tribe to provide tournament results, as a courtesy.

Mike Staggs, who heads the DNR’s fisheries bureau, says sustaining the fishery is the top priority. “We have worked closely with the tribe on management of the musky population and we will continue to do so,” he says.

Whatever you do outside this weekend, the wardens say have fun and stay safe.
