Wisconsin Conservation Congress: Ready to Get to Work for Wisconsin Deer Management

July 12, 2012

CONTACTS: Rob Bohmann 608 235-5825
                   Kari Lee-Zimmermann 608 266-0580

MADISON—The Wisconsin Conservation Congress’ Big Game Committee is looking forward to reviewing and discussing the recently released report, by Dr. Kroll and his team, of recommendations for improving Wisconsin’s white-tail deer management practices at their committee meeting next month.

“Dr. Kroll and his team, Dr.’s Guynn and Alt, did an outstanding job of involving the citizens of the state in this review and listening to their concerns,” said Rob Bohmann, Chair of the WCC.  Congress delegates from around the state assisted Dr. Kroll and his team in facilitating the six town hall meetings that were held throughout Wisconsin this past April.

“While I haven’t had a chance to review the entire report, at a glance, it appears they have made some great recommendations on key issues and we are looking forward to delving deeper into these recommendations in hopes of finding some common ground solutions to Wisconsin’s challenges regarding deer management and improving our management practices.”

Monday, DOA made public the final 136 page report from the Deer Trustee, Dr. James Kroll, who was retained by DOA to fill the “Deer Trustee” position which was created in September 2011, by an executive order of the governor.

“We are extremely pleased and honored that Dr.’s Kroll, Guynn, and Alt specifically noted as a recommendation that the Conservation Congress must have a more active role in deer management at the local level, and we are ready to take on that challenge. The Congress is prepared to work with the Department of Natural Resources as they review the recommendations and assist them where ever possible in the implementation. We are here to help in any way we can. While the report may now be final, the work has just begun.”
