Demons Roll to 6th Straight Victory at Wisconsin State High School Trap Shoot

May 11, 15-19, 2013 – Horicon Marsh Sportsmens Club, Mayville WI – For 41 years the Wisconsin State High School Trap Shoot has been held in Mayville, Wisconsin to determine the best school-based trap shooting team in Wisconsin. Over that time, many schools have taken turns at the top of the podium, but the Burlington High School Demons Shooting Team has monopolized the medals for the last few seasons. 2013 would be more of the same as the Racine County School won the state’s largest event for the sixth consecutive season with an impressive five-man squad score of 476 of 500 targets. In addition, the Demons swept both the boys & girls’ individual gold medals and the High Overall team award.

When the dust settled at the end of six long days of competition with 239 squads from across Wisconsin each with five young athletes shooting at 100 targets, the BHS Demons Shooting Team had three of the top-five squad scores of the event with the Demons No. 1 squad of Alexa McCarthy 93, Myles Walker 97, Terry Carr 88, Jordan Hintz 98 and Christian Jensen 100 tallying 476 to top the standings by 15 targets over Wilmot No. 2 with Beaver Dam No. 1 and BHS Demons No. 3 close behind at 460.

The Demons were paced by Senior Christian Jensen who broke his first-ever 100-straight in the event producing an emotional celebration by teammates, parents and coaches. It is the fourth straight year a Burlington athlete has been named the individual boys champion. Hintz in 2010, Walker in 2011 & 2012 and now Jensen in 2013. Over 975 boys participated in this year’s event.

Not to be outdone by the boys were the Lady Demons; Junior Ali Knight took top honors over 140 young ladies with an impressive 97 followed by Alexa McCarthy who won Ladies Class AA with 93.

“I am so proud of our team! To win at Mayville six times says a great deal about the entire team, said first year head coach Chet Tuinstra. “From the rookies to the seniors it's one team working hard, having fun and pulling together.”

Demons No. 3 squad of Mariah Kerr 91, Gunner Knight 92, Jacob DeRosier 90, Zach Hahn 90 and Ali Knight 97 tallied 460 and won the Class AA Runner-up award narrowly edging the 457 of BHS Demons No. 2 of Cody Schilz 97, Josh Grisham 95, Clayton DeFord 94, Cody McCarthy 91 and Cody Jensen 80.

The Demons also won the High Overall Award, which is the combination of the top-five trap scores (489) and top-three sporting clays scores (134) totaling 623 targets to best Milwaukee Marquette by 30 targets.

Hintz also entered the shoot’s record book by becoming the first athlete to win four consecutive team gold medals in each of his four high school seasons.

The Wisconsin State High School Trap Shoot benefitted from a new partnership with the Midway USA Foundation’s Scholastic Shooting Trust who offered contributions into qualifying Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) team’s endowment accounts. This year the shoot grew to over 1100 young athletes from all over Wisconsin. The event has grown so large that the 5-trap club just north of Mayville had to run the event on six days over two weekends.
