Happy New Year! We hope everyone had a wonderful fall and a fulfilling holiday season. Not only is this our busiest time of the year with multiple events for Heroes, it is also a very busy season for our fundraising. You may have noticed an email or Facebook post talking about our Give 5 Heal Lives campaign. This is our fundraising and awareness effort to bring more visibility to WWIA and our Heroes. Our intent is to ask people to donate $5 to the campaign, but also to take a second and share the request with the your friends and family.
Skip one pumpkin spiced latté and hit the share button on the WWIA page and you have done a great service for our Veterans! As our thanks, you will receive a free Membership Rewards Card. In order to make this campaign successful, we need to rely on the willingness of people who understand the good work we do and proactively share the news with others. We started a special donation website to track and receive these donations, and we hope you will assist us by spreading the word on social media.
Thanks again to all who take a moment out of their day to check out a photo on our Facebook page, share a post with a friend, read a tweet or re-tweet a post, or just forward this newsletter. Your assistance in passing the word about our mission out to others is invaluable!

Mercer Muskie Madness
16 - 17 October 2015
Mercer County Wisconsin: Muskie Fishing at its best - this is the 5th year running that the Mercer Chamber of Commerce has put on this event to honor Wounded Warriors in Action. There were so many people they had to add 12 more boats this year!
Jason and Doug went out to participate on a super cold day...They did not bring home the prize, but they did leave with renewed friendships and a great sense of being a part of a
supportive community!
Thanks to Tina Brunell and Gateway Lodge for making the event happen and being a part of raising $1,152 for the Foundation.
"I can't believe the number of people that came out to support WWIA - it was really cold and the weatherman said it was going to snow! So many people want to support the foundation - it is awesome." (D.A. USArmy)

8th Annual Camp Hackett
22 - 26 October 2015
Phillips, WI: Heroes Jake, Kenneth, Justin, and Levi, along with WWIA Founder John all descended on Camp Hackett the last week of October for an event in the northwoods of WI. Camp Hackett, owned by WWIA, is an amazing wilderness area with its own bunkhouse built with help from the community and a Wobble Trap range funded by the NRA. Located just outside the town of Phillips, WI, the local community provides all kinds of support when the Heroes are in town. There was even some mention of homemade pickles! This event is unique in that the Heroes alternate hunting and fishing for the three days they are in Wisconsin using three different approaches. They hunt whitetail deer with bows, ruffled grouse
with shotguns, and the mighty muskies with fishing poles.
We'd like to thank the wonderful people of the St Croix Casino who support this event through a fundraiser every summer. We also get help from other area businesses like Marquip Ward United and Club 13 and our Hides for Heroes program just to name a few. WWIA is proud to own this property within such a supportive community and appreciate all the support they provide.
"I came to Camp Hackett not knowing what it would be about. John and Jake were welcoming and involved. I got to meet two outstanding wounded warriors who will be life-long friends. My road to recovery has been marked by what I felt I needed to do versus what I want to do. Outdoors was once my passion and that fire now has been re-kindled. Thanks John and Jake for helping me make this first step!" (

Finger Lakes Duck and Bucks
20 - 23 November 2015
Seneca Falls Region, NY:A Whitetail archery hunt combined with a waterfowl over water hunt was on the docket for Heroes Anthony, Sammie,Michael, Jeremy and Associate Jeremy. The first night the heroes and guides met at the lodge with host Keith Tidball and discussed the upcoming event and what was to be expected. A meal was prepared by the Ovid VFW and the Heroes were well received.
The first day of hunting was a waterfowl hunt over water with decoys, hosted by Frontenac Fowlers/Jay Barnes, a partner of FLX Ducks and Bucks. The hunt was met with moderate success; a number of Canada geese were harvested. The geese were brought back to the Fowler's Roost Lodge, where a demonstration of game processing and preparation was conducted followed by a game luncheon. All Heroes participated in this activity enthusiastically, and enjoyed the block of instruction. The evening hunt yielded a crossbow kill of whitetail by Hero Anthony, guided by Keith Tidball.
The second day of the hunt featured a field hunt for ducks and geese on an exclusive property directly adjacent to the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. This hunt was extremely successful; all heroes shooting limits of mallards and black ducks. The evening whitetail hunts yielded some opportunities, but no connections!
On thethirdday, Heroes opted to focus on whitetail deer. Again, there were a few opportunities, with one deer wounded but not recovered. The final dinner was a banquet at the Kuneytown Sportsmen's Club, which was well attended and a great ending to a successful event.
"Couldn't have asked for a better planned trip. Everyone made me feel comfortable and welcome. Talking with fellow veterans helps in so many ways, especially to let yourself know that you're not alone. Can't wait for the next trip." (M.W. USArmy)

6th Annual Grand Ciel
Lodge Pheasant Hunt
16 - 19 November 2015
|
Plankton, SD:
The 6th Annual Pheasant Hunt was hosted again by Brad and Julie Boisen, Longtime supporter Brain Whetstone also flew in to assist with the Heroes when they arrived. From the time they were picked up at the airport, to a quick trip for licenses and any extra gear needed, the Heroes were treated like royalty.
On Saturday, the weather was great and assisted with the successful hunt with 32 pheasants put down. The food prepared by Host Julie Boisen throughout the day was excellent. On Sunday they had great weather again and an even more successful hunt with 51 birds put down! Hosts Brad & Julie treated the Heroes to a dinner at theirrestaurant, The Commerce Street Grille & Bar, in town of Plankton nearby that evening.
As with every WWIA event, no matter how successful the hunting or fishing, what makes a difference in the success of the event is the people. The guys all meshed together quickly, providing support and encouragement right off the bat. The Heroes and can all tell that Hosts really care about them and get comfortable right away. We thank the Boisen's for their continued support.
"This year was a little more user friendly for me because we learned what worked for my situation from the time before that. Food and hospitality were excellent as always. Always feel like one of the family when I'm there. The hunt was amazing, everyone got a bird or two and we can say no one got skunked."(G.H. USArmy)

Inaugural Oklahoma Whitetail Hunt
20 - 23 November 2015
Grand Ranch, Leedey,
OK: Sponsored by J & A Services and hosted by Russ Johnson, this Deer Hunt was a complete success. Associate
Nick and Heroes Wayne, Grady and Joseph all came to the Grand Ranch in search of their best Trophy Whitetails. Based on the pictures, it looks like they succeeded with 2 bucks and 3 does being harvested. They did not do it on their own, though. They had a great crew of guides, Carl and Randy, a great Ranch Manager Mark, and an awesome cook they called Ranch Momma Shannon. Part of what made this hunt extra special was the individual visits to each Hero by Josh and Roger Raglin who were advising and filming this event for the Outdoor Channel. We don't have an air date yet, but watch for the program to broadcast the segment this spring!
"I truly want to thank you for your time and dedication to make sure we had a good time, were well fed and you showed us people truly do still care. I did not realize how bad I needed this weekend. I am finally relaxed. Thank you so very much." (P.M. USMC)

NY Archery Deer Hunt
4 - 7 December 2015
Newfield, NY:
Carol and Bernie Cook hosted this first time archery event, and it was a huge win for all parties involved! The first stop was Arnot Forest Archery Shop for dinner and an instructional demonstration
on crossbow safety and operation was given by Rick McDermott of the NY Crossbow Coalition . Rick also loaned the Heroes three crossbows for the weekend to be utilized during the hunt. All Heroes were also givengreat gift from Cabela's of a complete hunting outfit!
At dawn the next morning, the Heroes and hunting party set out to stand locations that were a combination of solid structures, ground blinds, and tree stands. Around 0930 Jesse shot a nice 8 point with the crossbow from a ground blind.
The afternoon hunt had great weather with deer in sight,
just not in range. Dinner was hosted by the Shoe INN, a local tavern/restaurant. After a doe had been harvested the next morning, the afternoon was spend doing a deer drive on the opposite side of the property which yielded a very nice 8 point buck harvested by Adrian. A final hunt that evening yielded no more deer but they were again sighted throughout the property.
Dinner Sunday was hosted by Gary Allen, owner of the Seabring Inn. Monday morning there was still time for a few more hours of hunting before everyone had their final meal full of home-cooked food, jokes and conversation. As they left their great accommodations provided by the Wilderness Bed and Breakfast, the Heroes all left with deer meat packaged in coolers and labeled properly for each Hero. Thanks to Carol Cook for being such a great host and to the entire community of supporters for making this first time event so wonderful for these Heroes.
"I first want to express my deepest gratitude for the invite to the hunt in New York. I didn't put a dent in the deer population but I have something greater. I have new friends in new places that I can call on to just talk, or go have a cup of coffee with when I am in the area. There are things more important in life than getting a deer on a hunt. Things like reliving the good times deployed with other soldiers that might or might not have been in your area. Meeting new veterans who may or may not be as goofy as me. Talking smack across service lines. I have had more fun on this hunting trip than I ever had hunting before. I think maybe that it wasn't really the deer I was hunting for. Maybe it was just talking to other guys who get it. I think you're doing a wonderful thing up there in Newfield, NY. I wouldn't change a thing." (J.W. USArmy)

Founder's Corner

WWIA had our biggest and best year yet! We held 88 events this year in 30 different states and 3 foreign countries. We continually hear from the Heroes attending events that the experience changed their lives for the better and that our formula for healing makes a big difference in their world.
We are thrilled to announce the formation of the world's first multi-disciplinary Guide School for Purple Heart recipients! This training will further develop our Associates program and professionalize the Warriors to better serve Purple Hearts and the Foundation. The training will take place at the grand opening of our Northeast Healing Center located in Northern Maine this spring. This training was made possible by a grant from Veterans Affairs, so we appreciate their validation of what we do in the adaptive sporting arena. We also thank Vann White for developing and donating this Healing Center. This is an amazing location with state of the art facilities and 5 star lodging for our Heroes. We can't wait to get there and get started. We will have pictures available in the spring!
As always, we cannot run this Foundation and serve the Heroes we do without your support. We are greatly honored to have all of you as part of our WWIA family and appreciate your willingness to dedicate your time, talents, and treasures to us. Thank you for all you have done for all of us in 2015 and we look forward to a productive, safe, healing and exciting 2016.
If you have an idea for a fundraiser or way to generate money in support of our mission, please contact us at info@wwiaf.org The more income we generate, the more Purple Heart Heroes we can serve. Looking forward to hearing your ideas and thank you again for your continued support!
Respectfully and sincerely yours,

Double Creek Ranch was host to another WWIA event - this time is was an archery hunt for whitetail deer. Shelley and Dennis are true supporters of WWIA and our Heroes; always putting on a first class event. The hunting began the first morning with an early breakfast and greeting from the game warden who also supplied drinks and ice for the game harvested.
The three volunteer Guides took the Heroes to stands. The hunting was great, with lots of action and two harvests. All game was quartered, iced and packed for the Heroes to take home. This event had a special component - the brand new Bear Ridge Sporting Club hosted the Heroes for a free experience with the 3D Archery range as well as a free BBQ lunch. They all really enjoyed the new challenge.
"This four day weekend at Double Creek has been one of
my favorite hunts ever! The atmosphere here is warm and welcoming, and some of the best moments were the conversations around the table. Shelley and Dennis were the greatest hosts and their hospitality was that of family." (D.B. US Army)

3rd Annual Bayfield Cast & Blast
15 - 19 October 2015
Bayfield, WI: Chris and Brenda Diesing hosted yet another event in the northwoods of WI.
The 3rdAnnual Cast and Blast was a major success. The fishing guides provided prime locations to pull in fish and keep on the action. The hunting guides were able to provide all the Warriors a prime location to see deer. Although no deer were taken this trip we never measure our success by the game we harvest. The lodging at the Scenic View Lodge provided a true hunting lodge experience and the meals provided by Scenic View, Delta Diner and the Flying Eagle were delicious and plentiful in all aspects.
The Warriors, Guides and community members present all remarked on how amazed they were it how the event and the people came together. This group of Warriors was able to gel quickly and develop lifelong friendships within a few days and a good time was had by all.
"It helped me out so much just being in a stress-free environment, getting to be with other veterans and sharing stories, knowing what other people went through and understanding how other people cope, and being out fishing and hunting in the peace and quiet just having a good time and being around all the nice people in Delta, Wisconsin. Thank you to everybody that had a part in donating to this organization are having any part in putting this together and making this happen for us or doing this in the future to help another veteran because trust me it helps us.." 2nd Annual Western PA Deer Hunt
15 - 18 October 2015
Rural Valley, PA: Host Dan Bevevino and Associate Jeremy Smith worked together to host Heroes Rusty and Tim for a great weekend of Deer Hunting on the amazing Bevevino family property. This is the third time Dan has hosted WWIA Heroes so the event has gained notice and recognition from the local community. This has allowed more local people to step up to help make it a success and hope they can continue this in the future. Dan and his Family have the property, food, and atmosphere buttoned down tight so that everyone was able to relax, enjoy being outdoors, and talk like family. Along with some phenomenal home-cooked food, everyone had an almost perfect weekend of hunting...almost perfect since even though there were lots of deer signs and sightings, there was no harvest!
"I can't tell you how much I thank y'all for helping our nation's combat wounded. Hunting is just a small part of what you are doing. To meet people just like us means more than you know, I would like to thank you for the chance to meet these wonderful people." (R.M. USArmy)

22 - 26 October 2015
Foris Vineyards and Winery joined with Host Mike Martell to put on a great first time hunt in SW Oregon. Mark and Timm headed out to do some wildlife management hunting for Black Bearwithinthe OR vineyards and had great success. The trip exceeded any expectations - Mark got a huge bear and Timm got abeautifulDeer! What iseven better is that businesses from the local community came together and and donated the taxidermy and tanning. Research Mannikins Taxidermy Supply donated some supplies and Sewell's Taxidery donated the Black Bear Live Mount for Mark's bear and a Shoulder Mount for Timm's deer. Wildlife Fur and Dressing Tannery tanned the hides for the Heroes as well.

Inaugural Prairie
Du Chien Duck Hunt
8 - 11 October 2015

Prairie Du Chien,WI: This Duck Hunt event was a huge success in meeting/becoming good friends with some extraordinary people from Rig 'Em Right Waterfowl. The terrain and amount of waterfowl was ideal for duck hunting. Although the weather wasn't quite ideal, the hunt was eye-opening and a tremendous experience for all participants. Tim Macht, Scott Yeomans, Matthew Cagle, Luke Clark, Mike Valley, Paul Wait were all perfect hosts. Two combat wounded soldiers came into the Duck Inn Lodge and left with incredible memories and life-long friendships.
Not only was the hunting excellent, Rich and Johnathan were given an in depth river tour of the local history, culture and eco-system by someone who grew up and actively makes a living on the river. They also got a local tour of the hills to get a feel for other game habitat including turkey and whitetail deer. The accommodations and amenities at the Duck Inn Lodge were world class and the all the food provided was amazing. Rig 'Em Right Waterfowl really knows how to treat these Heroes well!
"I'm very humbled, honored, and blessed to have met all these new friends. As an avid duck hunter, this lodge and this experience is like something from a TV show. Everyone just clicked and some great friendships were made while we experienced their passion and experience in Duck Hunting. It felt nice to be able to breathe and relax in this laid back atmosphere, duck habitat and lodge ambiance." (J.F. USArmy)

Mississippi Cast and Blast
13 - 17 November 2015
|
Bay St Louis, MS:Audie Murphy and family hosted four Wounded Warriors for the third time. On the first day the Warriors arrived at the Host's home in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi. The group immediately went on their first hog hunt on the Lower Pearl River near Pearlington, Mississippi. On the second day, they went out looking for hogs again.
On Day 3, they traveled to Saint Bernard, LA, to saltwater fish in the Louisiana marsh for red fish and speckle trout with Captain Casey and friends. Unfortunately the wind was a little to active for good fishing, but they still managed to have a good time. That evening, Captain Casey and friends provided our Warriors and friends with a Louisiana Cajun shrimp boil while our guides cleaned and packed the few fish harvested
for the trip home. On the final day, there were hearty goodbyes and a great breakfast and lunch while packing up the meat
before sending the Heroes off in style!
"Words cannot express how thankful I am for this trip. "Rock" and the Murphy family as well as the wonderful community here have truly went above and beyond for my brothers and me to relax, unwind, reflect and keep moving forward. I have enjoyed EVERY second of the trip and my mouth hurts because I have laughed more, talked more, and smiled more than I have since I hung up my boots. Thank you for the memories." (T.P. US Army)

6th Annual Missouri - Kansas Ducks and Bucks (MO-KAN)
19 - 23 November 2015
|
The Annual MO-KAN event is legendary in its reach,
community support, number of animals harvested and all around awesomeness. Not only does Event Coordinator Brian get a committee together to host the Heroes in a way that can't be beat, he also manages a fundraiser that brought in over $35,000! This event provides a unique experience for 10 Heroes and 2 Associates. It is so big, they break into two groups in order to keep the heroes in smaller groups and alternate hunting duck and deer. Aaron, Cody, Dom, Joseph, David, Nathan, John, Ashton, Carl and Shane all participated in the Duck and Deer hunt, by switching out morning and afternoon time slots. One Hero even brought his own track chair in order to fully join in. Accommodations were provided by the Napier Hunt Club and the Sportsman Lodge with a dinner on Friday night at the No Place Bar and a dinner Sat night hosted by the MO Department of Conservation. As seen in the pictures, everyone was successful in the harvest. Due to the amazing hard work of the Mo-Kan committee of associates and volunteers, this event just keeps getting better and better. We appreciate their dedication to serving these Heroes year after year.

3rd Annual Great Creek Hunt Club
3 - 6 December 2015
Alberta, VA: Host Andy Wilson and the Great Creek Hunt Club once again put together a great event for WWIA Heroes Lawrence, Chad, Joshua and Associate Derek.
They were set up in the great accommodations of the Hunt Club and given access to the enormous hunting land for each day's hunt. The members of this club do a great job at making the Heroes all feel like they are part of the family and embraces them from the very beginning of the event. Thanks to Great Creek for their continued hospitality and support of Heroes that need a break from their daily lives.
"Great Creek Hunt Club is unbelievable. I'm an islander/out of his demographic and the men and women of the club treated us like one of their own. Not one uncomfortable moment. At the first still hunt I had an opportunity to shoot at some deer and bagged a doe. Running the dogs brought an adrenaline rush very similar to combat. It is such a great experience. After the hunts the camaraderie and brotherhood continues as if the men of the club served with me in the Marine Corps. They showed great humor and sarcasm demonstrating to us what long lasting friendships could be. I'd do this again and again if I could. Thanks to the club and WWIA for giving us the opportunity.(

TN Rifle Deer Hunt
4 - 7 December 2015
Hohenwald, TN, Double Creek Ranch: WWIA Associates and Host Shelley and Dennis did it again with a spectacular Whitetail Deer weekend. With donations from the TN Friends of the NRA and a true plethora of local community donors like Highland Charitable Corporation, they were able to set up a great event for all who attended. There were
even articles in the local papers! There was also time for some horseback riding and just enjoying the great outdoors. Thanks to James, Jamie, Mack and Joyce for coming together as either volunteer guides or by providing food for the Heroes.

"I have had a great mistrust of people for a very long time, but being here and seeing how I was treated by both Dennis and Shelly as well as Derek has given me faith in people again. It has been a true pleasure to be
here with such great people. The men, my brothers in arms, that I met here were also a pleasure. We are the same but different. Different wars but same results. Healing is a long process but with people like these, it makes that healing much easier. Always remain as you are. You do great work as well as all from WWIA.(R.G. USArmy)
