WIAFF Update 1-22-14

WWIAF

WWIA Local chapters start up in

MO/KAN and New Jersey!

WWIA is lucky enough to have great support in two new areas across the country.  In the western New Jersey area, we have a group of people that are working to raise money to fund the mission of WWIA. Through our affiliation with Hudson Farm, we now have a new Chapter working the local area.  Out on the border between Kansas and Missouri, we have the MO-KAN Chapter, an extremely vibrant Chapter with President Brian Roderick and new Associate Joe Knorr.  They work together with a huge group of American Sportsmen and business owners in the area to provide a World Class experience each November.  They host so many Heroes that they must break them down into teams in order to keep the Hero numbers in small groups.  This event is so big, that they start working on the next year even before the current year is complete!

We also have two extremely active areas in Wisconsin and Ohio - these are typically run by our Associates and host as many events as possible each year.  Between the two states, we have more than a dozen events scheduled for 2014, due to the hard working efforts of these Associates and the people who assist them in their fundraising and hosting duties.

Recent Event Highlights

Lacrosse, WI Speedway Racing:

5 - 8 Oct 2013

LaCrosse Speedway in Wisconsin: After a dinner with the race crew the previous evening, WWIA Associate Kelsey Smith and hero Doug Alderton participated as the pit crew for a day of practice and qualifying, then got to attend the actual race the next day - in the action - what a thrill!  Many thanks to Host Ed Schell.

Louisiana Dove Hunt

10 OCT - 14 OCT

Our Inaugural Louisiana Dove Hunt was a great success!  The event was held at Duckpond Plantation.  It has approximately 3000 acres of timber land, open fields, and lakes in Tensas Parish, Louisiana just south of the town of St. Joseph and just a few miles from Lake Bruin. Duckpond has excellent deer, duck, dove, rabbit, and squirrel hunting and the fishing is exceptional with lakes and borrow pits that are naturally restocked by the Mississippi River yearly.  Host John Godfrey had a  Chef from Emeril's Restaurant cook some amazing local dishes for the Heroes!  As shown in the picture, Heroes Mac, Matthew, Bill, Deron, and Shane were joined by Founder John McDaniel and a whole slew of supporters who all helped make this an event to remember.

Bayfield Cast and Blast - a first time event!
   17 - 20 October 2013

Chris Diesing and the rest of the community are so appreciative of what our Heroes have done for our country, they could not wait to have the chance to show it! Monster Smallmouth Bass fishing was offered along with Duck and Grouse Hunting. All bird hunting was with guides and dogs. The all day fishing excursion was with Dave Brown, host of the TV show Keyes Outdoors. The event was located in the town of Delta and is nestled in the middle of the big woods of WI, just 20 miles south of Lake Superior. Ruffed Grouse abound in these woods.  Not only were Heroes Josh, Corey and Brandon treated to some awesome hunting and fishing with Guides Govy, Todd Bucher and Jeff Evans, they were also treated to some awesome food at the Delta Diner, Flying Eagle Resort, and the Scenic Drive Resort.  They were even given homemade pies from a local church group - talk about community support! It was such a great event, Heroes are already looking forward to next year!

Mercer Muskie Madness

18 - 20 OCT 2013

The 2nd Annual Mercer Muskie Madness Challenge held on October 18&19, 2013 was a huge success for both the Mercer Area and the WWIA - Wounded Warriors in Action. 22 teams registered to compete in this fun two day tournament where  14 of the many muskies caught over the two days were eligible for points;  six ranged from 36-40", while the other 8 were over 40" (legal size).

This tournament was held in honor and to benefit WWIA.  Two Purple Heart recipients, Matt Tennessen and Tony Pemble competed in the event. Tony Pemble teamed up with his Dad, Don Pemble who has been a local guide in the area for many years. Matt Tennessen was teamed up with Todd Emro, also a Mercer resident.

Many thanks to the 2013 event sponsors: the Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce, Gateway Lodge & Resort and the Turtle Flambeau Flowage Association; to Matt Tennessen & Tony Pemble and all the other WWIA for their brave service; Gary N-Ski Photography for the great photos; and to everyone that participated in the tournament. Plans are underway already for next year's event, so be sure to mark your calendars for October 17 & 18, 2014.

South Dakota Pheasant Hunt

17-20 OCT 2013

Host Brad and Julie Boisen hosted another AMAZING event for four Heroes, Associate Jason Johns, and COO Dixon Gunther for their 4th Annual Pheasant Hunt held at the Grand Ceil Lodge in Plankinton, SD, located west of the city of Sioux Falls.  The Boys managed to knock down 64 roosters during the course of the 4-day event, hunting over Brad's Braques Francais' and Rick's Labrador retrievers! The hunting ground is a combination of broken prairie farmland, treed shelter belts, and corn stubble punctuated by a creek bottom throughout the property.  This is an amazing event that uses 5 star accommodations along with 5 Star hunting, guides and Dogs.  WWIA is honored to be included with this event and thanks the Boisens, Rick McConico, Jim and all the local community for their continued support!

Annual Muskie Fly Fishing Tournament

25 - 27 OCT 2013

The Muskie Fly Fishing World Championship was held in Hayward, Wisconsin and WWIA folks were hosted by Brad Bohen and Paul Strapon and stayed at the Treeland Resort.  Sr Associate Mark Broda and Hero Tyson had an event not only filled with fishing, but lots of fun  while being included in the Championship Events.  After fishing on Day 1, they attended a Fish Fry, and a  Charity Predator Fly Auction and Industry Night. They had more fishing on day 2 followed by an Awards Dinner and Annual Muskie Ball, had a huge breakfast on day 3 followed by a one day Muskie Challenge.  If all that is not enough, they also got to go to WWIA's Camp Hackett for a night to reflect in the great wilderness of Northern WI before heading home.

Hero Tyson shows off his championship Muskie!

Bridge Creek Tennessee Trophy Hunt
 15 - 18 NOV

Host Tom Van Dorselaer and Lodge Owner Jeff Molands welcome WWIA Senior Associate Tim Spence and Hero Dennis Leonard to the Second Bridge Creek Trophy Hunt on the Cumberland Plateau in
beautiful eastern Tennessee.  Bridge Creek is an enclosed hunting space that is a
 great venue for our Heroes
that need to use alternative options for mobility.  Dennis was able to hunt using a track chair and had a great experience!   Thanks to the folks at Bridge Creek for hosting again this year.  WWIA looks forward to allowing another Hero to participate next year!

MO/KAN Hunt (Missouri
 and Kansas area)
