Sturgeon Spearing Regulation Reminders

Local Conservation Wardens would like to remind spearers of  a number of regulations. These were commonly encountered violations during opening day of the 2019 sturgeon spearing season on the Winnebago System.

  • Spearers are required to have a paper copy of their tag with them while spearing. A digital copy or a driver’s license does not meet the requirement.
  • The paper tag must be immediately validated by removing the bottom portion of the tag upon harvest of the sturgeon.
  • Sturgeon must be openly exposed and visible to another passing vehicle while being transported until the sturgeon is registered at a DNR check station.
  • Spearing hours are 7 AM to 1 PM. Spearers cannot be in a shack with a spear outside of those hours.

As always we encourage speares to read the regulations each year. If you are unsure of any regulation please contact your local conservation warden of the DNR information line at 1-888-936-7463.
