Statewide birding report: Snowstorm follows biggest migration of year

Biggest migration event of season so far followed by snowstorm

Last weekend saw the biggest migration event of the season thus far. As a result, sparrows are showing well now with song, fox, savannah, swamp, and the first chipping and white-throated sparrows in the south.

This week, another April snowstorm is bearing down on portions of Wisconsin and the upper Midwest. Although such spring snowstorms are common in Wisconsin, the impacts on early avian migrants can be significant if the snow is deep and persists for more than a couple days.

Read on for a roundup of avian arrivals and how to help them weather tough conditions.

See a bird, save a bird: Teams forming now for Great Wisconsin Birdathon

From Mr. Dargatz's kindergarten class, to a solo birder on a bike, to hard-core birders itching to break their record of 195 species, teams are forming for the Great Wisconsin Birdathon -- but more are needed!

Bird lovers of all skill levels are invited to form a team or join one (solo teams welcome!) to record all the species you find in a single day while raising money for the birds you love. The birdathon supports conservation and research projects in Wisconsin including protection of endangered Kirtland’s warblers, statewide bird monitoring efforts like the Wisconsin Breeding Bird Atlas, and community engagement including Bird City Wisconsin.

Online giving makes it easy to get pledges. So gather your friends, grab your binoculars, and get ready to bird for a good cause!
