Slideshow: 1st peregrines hatch in Door Co. since '50s
DDT ban, protections and nest boxes pay off as peregrine falcon populations grow
Good news for Wisconsin’s peregrine falcons, a state endangered bird known for its beauty and diving speeds of over 200 miles per hour. On the brink of extinction in the 1970s, these raptors continue to grow in numbers and expand into new places.
Last week, two young female peregrine falcons were banded in Door County, representing the product of the first known successful peregrine falcon nest in the Door Peninsula since the 1950s! Our slide show takes you to the edge of the cliffs where the birds are banded for future tracking and shares their story.
