Sauk Prairie Recreation Area open for spring turkey hunting and other outdoor activities

BLUFFVIEW, Wis. -- The Sauk Prairie Recreation Area will open April 11 for the youth turkey hunt, which takes place April 11-12. Regular season spring turkey hunters will be able to hunt on recreation area through all six hunting periods of the statewide spring turkey hunt<http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/hunt/turkey.html>.
A map [PDF]<http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/saukprairie/pdfs/saukprairiemap.pdf> of the Department of Natural Resources-owned lands and access points are available by searching the DNR website,dnr.wi.gov<http://dnr.wi.gov/>, for "Find a Park<http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/findapark.html>," and then select "Sauk Prairie Recreation Area<http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/parks/name/saukprairie/>," from the drop-down menu for state recreation areas.
The youth turkey hunt <http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/hunt/youth.html> is limited to youths age 10 to 15 and their mentors. Only the youths may hunt. Similar youth-only seasons are offered for white-tailed deer and waterfowl. More information on the youth hunt is available at dnr.wi.gov by searching for "youth hunt."
Only DNR owned lands and designated access roads are open to the public for the spring hunt. The public may also access DNR lands for other outdoor activities such as hiking, biking and birding beginning April 11. Please study the available map and refrain from entering lands owned by the USDA-Dairy Forage Research Center and the Ho-Chunk Nation.
The property is still undergoing demolition and clean-up work. Please be aware of closed areas and potential hazards from construction debris and demolished structures. In addition, the Wisconsin National Guard continues to conduct field exercises that may close certain areas.
The Sauk Prairie Recreation Area consists of a 3,400 acre portion of the decommissioned 7,354 acre Badger Army Ammunition Plant. The Ho-Chunk Nation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Dairy Forage Research Center also own portions of the site which are not open to hunting or any other activities.
