STATEMENT FROM DNR SECRETARY CATHY STEPP: DNR applauds U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service extension on listing northern long-eared bat
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources applauds the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for its prudent decision to provide a six-month extension for the final listing determination on the northern long-eared bat. The extension allows stakeholders, including the state of Wisconsin, our neighboring states, forestry management partners and federal officials additional time to develop effective conservation measures for this important species using the best science available.
Wisconsin DNR also will continue working with affected industries and landowners to protect the bats and ensure their access to diverse regional summer roosting locations and winter hibernacula.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe and Midwest Regional Service Director Tom Melius deserve our thanks for their continued partnership and willingness to engage states in considering a listing for this important species.
Wisconsin has been leading the effort to bring together scientific experts from affected states and develop a measured approach in collaboration with stakeholders across our state.
DNR recognizes the unique challenges facing the northern long-eared bat as a result of white-nose syndrome and appreciates the role our sustainably managed forests and other lands play in providing important habitat.
