ROOT RIVER REPORT
FISHING WISCONSIN

The following information is the latest fishing information for the Root River in Racine. We will post new information to this site every TUESDAY or WEDNESDAY at 4:00 pm from September through December and from March through May. We will also update the number of fish processed at the Root River Steelhead Facility to give you the exact number of fish passed upstream. Depending on water conditions and the number of fish in the weir, fish are usually processed on Mondays and Thursdays.
In addition, you can check out our Lake Michigan Outdoor Report for the latest fishing information on Lake Michigan and Green Bay.
Root River Steelhead Facility
Lake Michigan trout and salmon don't successfully reproduce in Wisconsin streams, so DNR gives Mother Nature a hand. Watch fisheries crews collect eggs and milt from spawning fish to create the next generation of steelhead to challenge anglers.
Root River Fishing Report for November 2, 2020
The Root River experienced a slight decrease in angling activity over the past week. Most of the activity was seen at the Horlick Dam as anglers were targeting the salmon and trout that are staying in the deeper pools now that water levels have dropped significantly since last week’s rain. Most anglers were using fly fishing tackle to catch their fish. A large mix of coho and chinook were caught using a combination of flies, spawn, and spinners. One angler was lucky enough to catch a brown trout as well. Fishing should continue to be good for a few more weeks as the coho are finishing up their spawning run. More steelhead and brown trout should be coming into the river as well. Water clarity improved now that water levels dropped on the river. The water temperature near the mouth was 44 degrees by the end of the week.
Root River Steelhead Facility Report

Our last processing day for the Fall 2020 season at the Root River weir was November 2. Water levels in the Root River have dropped back down to below 40 cfs, and the water temperature in the weir was 40 degrees.
