Root River Report update

Root River Report

Root river station

The following information is the latest fishing information for the Root River in Racine. We will post new information to this site every TUESDAY or WEDNESDAY at 4:00 pm from September through December and from March through May. We will also update the number of fish processed at the Root River Steelhead Facility to give you the exact number of fish passed upstream. Depending on water conditions and number of fish in the weir, fish are usually processed on Mondays and Thursdays.

In addition, you can check out our Lake Michigan Outdoor Report for the latest fishing information on Lake Michigan and Green Bay.

Root River Steelhead Facility

Lake Michigan trout and salmon don't successfully reproduce in Wisconsin streams, so DNR gives Mother Nature a hand. Watch fisheries crews collect eggs and milt from spawning fish to create the next generation of steelhead to challenge anglers.

Root River Fishing Report for April 15, 2019

A decrease in fishing success may be attributed by rising water levels and murky water due to the inclement weather we’ve been receiving.

Fishing Information

Fishing pressure on the Root River remained fairly high throughout the week. Even though the fishing pressure has been high, fish catches were few and far between. The river temperature was about 46 degrees. The most popular bait among anglers is still spawn sacs. Suckers are abundant in the river at this time.

Root River Steelhead Facility Report

Our fourth processing day for the Root River Steelhead Facility was April 15th.

What a difference a week makes! Last week the morning temperature were hovering around 50 degrees, while this week there was several inches of snow on the ground! This was the third spawning day of the season, and again we saw a few more Ganaraska than Chambers Creek. This week’s spawning puts us over the million-egg mark for the season. We are planning on processing again next Monday, April 22nd. This will likely be our last processing day until the fall salmon run.
