Richland County Fishing Report May 16

On Wisconsin Outdoors

The water levels are finally receding, and fishing is picking up.  The trout streams are still a little muddy but an enjoyable time to catch the big ones.  If I can see a foot below the water surface, the trout will bite on those big streams that are brown in color.  Make sure you know what trout streams are catch and release and those you can keep up to a certain amount and size.

The backwaters of the Wisconsin River are dropping fast, and the bluegill action is picking up.  Males are grouped up, and you need to fish around to find them.  From mid-day on they are in the shallows, and I mean 4 to 12 inches of water. Watch for any activity on the surface to locate them.  I had the best luck with a piece of night crawler and light tackle (4-pound test).  I do not use a bobber or sinker and make long casts so as not to spook them.

Mushrooms are starting to show up and the morel mushroom festival in Muscoda is on for May 19th and 20th.
