Public to review hunting regulations at Mead Wildlife Area

MILLADORE, Wis. - The Mead Wildlife Area will host a post waterfowl season
meeting to discuss the 2013 hunting season and special regulations that have
been in effect for the past four years.  The meeting will be held from 6 to
8 p.m. Feb. 19.
An alternative date of Feb. 26 will be used if limiting weather conditions
are forecasted.  If poor weather is in the forecast, interested individuals
can call 715-457-6771, extension 5, on Feb. 19.  A recorded message will
indicate if the meeting has been rescheduled.
Mead is located between Stevens Point and Marshfield, five miles north of
U.S. 10 on County Highway S.
Mead staff and those attending will discuss the results of regulation
changes implemented during the 2010 season.  These regulations were produced
and recommended by Central Wisconsin waterfowl hunters and outdoor
enthusiasts who attended meetings in April 2007 and February 2008 to discuss
ways in which they could improve the overall waterfowling experience on the
Mead Wildlife Area.
This group voiced strong support for regulations that would eliminate early
waterfowl hunting seasons at Mead, with the exception of the youth hunt,
thus reducing disturbance to staging migrant waterfowl on the property.
They also supported the establishment of waterfowl resting periods and
resting areas - a 1 p.m. daily closure of hunting and enlarged waterfowl
refuges within which there is no shooting - to provide waterfowl some relief
from hunting pressure. The new regulations became permanent at the beginning
of the 2013 season.
Additional topics at this year's meeting include permissible canoe tie-up
areas on both the Mead and McMillan Wildlife areas and the proposed early
teal season. Any other season-related issues or items of interest to
attendees will be open for discussion as well.
The Mead staff encourages interested individuals to take this opportunity to
discuss, analyze and share impressions of the past waterfowl season and
share hopes for future seasons.
Further details and refuge maps are available at Mead Wildlife Area's
Visitor Center or at www.meadwildlife.org <http://www.meadwildlife.org/>  or
by calling 715-457-6771.
