Natural area gems to visit on Free Fun Weekend
Explore these State Natural Area gems in State Parks
DNR's annual Free Fun Weekend is a great time to sample all the fantastic recreation and nature Wisconsin has to offer. On this first full weekend in June, admission to state parks and trails is free and so is fishing.
More than 70 State Natural Areas are embedded within state parks and so normally require a parks admission sticker to enter. These sites are great places to visit any time, but particularly on this weekend when park admission fees are waived.
Our new interactive guide gives you a preview of 11 of these gems. DNR staff, partners and volunteers work hard to care for these embedded sites and 600+ other state natural areas that protect the very best of Wisconsin flora, fauna, and native landscapes. We are grateful for their stewardship of these special places and the native and endangered species that call these sites home.
These lands belong to you. We invite you to explore them and if you are not already, to get involved in caring for them!
[A reminder that the Dells of The Wisconsin River, Gibraltar Rock, Parfrey's Glen and Pewits Nest state natural areas remain closed for the health and safety of the public, staff, and property integrity.]
