Natural Resources Board approves scope statement allowing flexibility in walleye limits

http://dnr.wi.gov/news/releases/article/?id=3468

MADISON -- A scope statement granting the Department of Natural Resources flexibility to consider alternatives to reductions in walleye bag limits in the Wisconsin ceded territory was approved Wednesday by the Natural Resources Board.

The scope statement provides the department with the option of using management tools such as various length limits or season limits in addition to reduced bag limits for managing angler harvest of walleye in the ceded territory, where six Wisconsin Chippewa Bands exercise their rights to fish, hunt and gather on public lands, as provided by treaties negotiated with the United States in 1837 and 1842.

"The scope statement approved Wednesday allows the Department to consider new rules that would help provide more stable regulations while bringing more predictability to anglers and communities that benefit from a strong walleye fishery. We expect the change will produce a positive economic impact," said Steve Hewett, DNR fisheries management section chief.

This action complements department efforts to ensure a vibrant sport fishery and restore naturally reproducing walleye populations in lakes that formerly supported good native walleye fisheries through the Wisconsin Walleye Initiative, a three year, $12 million effort involving private and tribal partnerships.

"We appreciate the support of the Natural Resources Board in approving this additional flexibility and we look forward to continued collaboration with the Chippewa tribes and our partners and stakeholders throughout northern Wisconsin to craft rules based on sound science and fisheries management experience," Hewett said.
