A sure sign of winter's impending reign, Dark-eyed Juncos are now abundant in the north and showing well through southern Wisconsin. Weedy fields, brush piles, and scattered ground seed are attracting other sparrows as well. Waterfowl numbers are building at local lakes and wetlands. Northern Saw-whet Owls are also on the move. Catch an up-close glimpse of this secretive species at one of several regional banding stations, includingLinwood Springs in Stevens Point, Beaver Creek Reserve near Eau Claire, Woodland Dunes Nature Center in Manitowoc County, or Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory in Duluth.
