The 5 "S's" to Summer Sun Safety
Summer is here, and along with it, the sun! I love being outside, but I hate getting sunburned. It is painful, and skin cancer is among the top 10 types of cancer you can contract. So here are the 5 S's to Summer Sun Safety:
1) Slip: Slip on a T-shirt
2) Slop: Slop on SPF 30(or higher) broad-spectrum UVA sunscreen
3) Slap: Slap on a broad-brimmed hat
4) Slide: Slide on quality sunglasses
5) Shade: Shade from the sun whenever possible
There you have it; Slip, Slop, Slap, Slide, and Shade yourself to healthy skin.

Friction Fire Class at the REC
|
The Friction Fire Making course is energetic for people who have always wanted to make fire by rubbing two sticks together. This course will focus on the bow drill.
Understanding fire-making skills is essential and can be a lifesaver in a wilderness survival situation. From staying warm in a shelter, creating light, purifying water, and cooking food, survival fire skills are essential for relaxed climate environments. Anyone who spends time outdoors should be proficient at fire-making.
The class includes demonstrations, practical information, and hands-on practice and will cover bow drills and other friction fire-starting techniques. Each participant will construct their bow drill kit to practice with and take home! Soon, you’ll be making a fire in the woods with sets made using only natural materials and no modern tools but your pocket knife.
