March issue of Wisconsin Forestry Notes

In addition to the attached issue of the March newsletter from the DNR Division of Forestry, please note the important announcements in this news release "To help prevent oak wilt, don't prune oaks April through July" and this announcement from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection:

Due to the unusually cold winter temperatures, the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is extending deadlines for transporting and processing regulated ash products within Wisconsin.  The transport deadline is now extended to April 30, and the processing deadline is now May 31.  Firewood is not included in the extension.

The extension is available only to businesses that have emerald ash borer (EAB) compliance agreements with either DATCP or the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To obtain the extension, current compliance agreement holders should contact Tim Allen, timothy.allen@wisconsin.gov608-516-7196, or Christopher Deegan, christopher.deegan@wisconsin.gov608-224-4573.

EAB generally begins its adult emergence when temperatures reach 450 growing degree days (base 50).  Based on long-term forecasts, the 30-day extension will still be well before emergence.
